When Helen Self turned 100, she went for a spin on a Harley-Davidson.
When she turned 108, she was named one of Montana’s two oldest people.
And when Self turned 109 a few weeks ago, she got a whopping birthday discount based on her age: A restaurant gave her a 109 percent discount on her meal — meaning the restaurant actually paid her to eat there.
Restaurant owner Nick Alonzo was there to hand her the dollar and change, and in return she gave him a kiss on the cheek.
“I’ll come back next year,” Self said, according to her daughter Shirley Gunter, 86. “Don’t tell his wife I kissed him.”

I love the nail polish—candy apple red, I believe.
😀
Happy Birthday
I’ll never make it to 109, I’m afraid! It blows me away just thinking about it. But it warms my heart that the fellow at the Montana Club offers the discount to everyone. It’s such a friendly thing to do and is great PR.
what a sweetheart. and a wicked sense of humor too!
Yes! No grumpy old lady there.
wow – that’s a great innings – and even better she is out and about…
And as tammy says, with a great sense of humor.
Happy Birthday Helen!
How wonderful she’s still active and evidently healthy!
I wonder what’s inside that present next her?
I mean, what sort of gift would you give to a 109 yr old?
😉
I have no idea! 😀
I recently attended the 100th birthday breakfast celebration of the father of a friend of mine. Though it is not a custom among us, I had taken a box of soft dry fruit chocolates for the grand old man. It was a nice function and after I reached back home around lunch time I got a phone call from my friend that his father sent his thanks and also his intention to get another box of the same gift the next year too!
Good for him, and for you!
I don’t think any local restaurant would give me a 71% discount somehow, let alone 109%. I somehow doubt I shall survive till 109 in any case. Just reading the news headlines is enough to finish me off!
I think this restaurant is doing an impressive thing. It’s sowing good will and will no doubt reap some benefit.
