Building Themselves Up

In this Pears Before Swine cartoon Rat is an advice columnist.

Question: Dear Rat, I want to be great. How do I go about it?

Rat: Well, greatness is relative. So belittle others.

Rat then turns to Pig and says, “I have a knack for this.”

Have you ever known people who have tried to tear people down to build themselves up? I have!

I guess you could call rat a true Opportunist!
I think my last encounter with that type was in junior high school. which is now called middle school.
but in today’s world even adults have thrown away the good manners book.
if they want less teen age suicides that might be one way of stopping or at least slowing them down. by teaching empathy and respect for others’ feelings. the teen years are hard enough without one of their peers tearing them down. but then … maybe they wouldn’t be prepared for the ‘real world!’
so I don’t know the answer to this! but it’s an interesting question.

Our politics is full of it and you cannot escape one or the other national figure doing this every day.

The Me Too movement here is another instance of the whole thing having gone awry.

I cannot think of any group of people, families included that will not have a few individuals who will belittle others to make themselves appear bigger!

It appears to be a popular trend, now that POTUS has shown us how to do it so effectively. The idea is to DESTROY your target, not to merely belittle them!

  4. I’m pretty sure it rife anywhere in the world – be it a little place or a big place…

I believe I’ve talked about people who believe that they should “advise” me because I’m doing it all wrong – as if their age meant that they had more knowledge on any subject – especially if what I do is alien to them, well below normal standards.

Yes, I’ve known a few people like that. When I was working for a major charity, a new manager was appointed who was keen to big himself up and surround himself with yes men (or women). So he made out that four long-standing admin staff including myself were incompetent, got us all made redundant and hired some of his old cronies.

The law is excellent and badly needed. The national register too is badly needed as some political elements imported illegals into our country and were making them into vote banks disturbing local demographies/languages/job markets.
