Elk

Andy and I saw three elk on the way home Sunday night — a single one plus a pair a little later. Then last night we saw two herds, the first about six to eight elk, the second more than twenty. One lady elk was in the middle of the road looking away from us. We were going very slowly and she finally turned and saw us when we were about twenty feet away. She looked surprised but not spooked and ambled off to the side of the road.

Kaitlin, Torben, and the pups had a different experience Sunday afternoon when they were taking a walk with Andy. Zoe had wandered off (at her usual energetic pace) and Kaitlin, Torben, and Tempi were looking for her. Tempi had looked up to the top of a ridge so Kaitlin was looking there and saw two bull elk. They started running, chased by a black dot. Hmm. So Kaitlin yelled,

ZOE!! COME!!

They are working on that command. Sometimes it works better than others.

Oh, but it is so hard to stop chasing… my brother had a coin dog that could not be turned lose or he would be gone a day or two hunting. I know that instinct is probably stronger in some than others.

  2. My dog has a strong chase instinct too, not good in the city where dogs get hit by cars while chasing cats. Like Rose above when we lived in the country we had dogs that would chase something and not come back for days. Not sure if it’s still true but land owners in the country could legally shoot a dog in the chase. We actually lost a dog that way.

That’s what Kaitlin and Torben worry about when they bring Zoe up to the land. Tempi explores, but she checks in to make sure the human members of the pack are still there. Today Zoe walked with them off leash for more of the trip, but she had to be put on a lead towards the end.

Oh no, I hope that little black dot came when she was called.

We would probably want to chase the elk too, but Mom says that is not a very wise idea:)

    Happy New Year!!!

I’d be too worried to ever let anyone off lead.
Several of my coworkers do so with their dogs but I don’t have the courage or the faith that they’d come back.
That being said, I bet Zoe was having the time of her life!
    😀
    HAPPY NEW YEAR!
    I can’t believe it’s actual 2020!

She enjoyed being able to run free. They have a good dog park in their area where she can do it too, but even though it covers a big area, it’s fenced in.
