Who would have guessed it? When Andy, the architect and the contractor were up there Friday deciding how to handle the lightning protection, the architect said the chimney was too high. We need to tear it down and make it shorter. He was going to draw up a sketch over the weekend so Joe, the contractor, could give us an estimate of how much it would cost us. Do you find that as funny as I do? 😀
We noticed weeks ago that the chimney design was a bit crazy. Now that the subject has come up we’ll consider having it changed next spring, if it bothers us then and the price is right. There is no way we want to open up a hole in the roof this close to winter.
The roofers are supposed to come this week to replace the temporary green cover with brown shake shingles to match the rest of the roof. The lightning protection won’t be the most attractive alternative, but it will be one that will do the job and will be easy to do. I’ll post pictures when that gets installed.
So, did anything tickle your funny bone this past week?
Ranjan and I went out for lunch together on Sunday. The restaurateur, a friend, was zapped to see the two of us together! When I asked him as to why he was zapped, he answered that this was the first time that he had seen a father and son combination on a lunch date!
Regarding the chimney you’d have to laugh or have a good cry! Interesting how no one is willing to accept this mistake as their own. “La-de-dah?”
I have a person interested in becoming ‘my’ roommate. Not that I was looking but this person has no job. (?) OH, but receives $200. in food stamps… I wonder if the power company would accept a pizza delivery in place of say, cash for service? ;P
Funny, I don’t have a funny bone. I wish I did. I can’t even laugh when it’s not MY chimney. But Jean is my role model. Maybe it will happen & I’ll develop a funny bone.

Apparently the architect doesn’t like to draw plans. We’re impressed that the place is turning out as well as it is.

I thought of the widow’s walk, too. I’m starting to think the chimney is cute. I told Andy I can’t see us rebuilding it next year, but he says he’s keeping an open mind. We’ll have to see.
So what if the chimney’s too high? Does that create some sort of problem? Are there building regulations that only allow a certain chimney height? It seems crazy to rip it down and start again.
I see humor all around me that make me laugh. I’m unable to laugh when something is all wrong. “All you can do is laugh.” Jean quote. It’s a skill. She’s not called cheerfulmonk (monk being calm) for nothing.
I think of frustration on backpack, kayak, bicycle trips with the kids. Not funny at the time but laughable later. Why not laugh when it happens?
Do you need that thing you call a chimney at all? To be honest it reminds me of the outhouse at our cabin. All you need are the stove pipes. They’d be inconspicuous. I see them on cabins with wood-burning stoves.

The idea of the chimney was to have one place where all the vents plus the stovepipe came through the roof. We naively thought it was so high to hide all the vents. We don’t know what the architect was thinking. 🙂 The code says the vents have to extent certain distances from the structure. It has no problem with the high chimney. That’s an aesthetic consideration (or maybe lightning). I’m surprised Andy is still thinking that we might change it because of looks.

I would be very surprised if it’s still an issue next spring. As I said, now that the surprise has worn off the whole thing makes me laugh.

Yes, a bit too late. It wouldn’t matter to be annoyed now, since it is something that must be done, but it would get to my wits a bit.
Your strategy is good: let winter pass.
Other than this small setback, I would say that the place is getting gorgeous and cosy :).

Yes, it is getting cozy looking. Here’s a picture Andy took from just outside the front door. The kitchen cabinets aren’t in yet, and the place will look even smaller once they’re installed. We had a picnic supper up there Wednesday evening and the place felt just right for two people. We’ll see how it works when Kaitlin, Torben, Sammy and Montana (the granddogs) come this Christmas. It should be fun.
