Anniversaries

Do you celebrate anniversaries? Andy and I mostly don’t but — once we realized it — last Wednesday was special. We both took an early retirement package in 1993 and our last day of work was October 31st. Wow! 20 years! If that isn’t mind-blowing, I don’t know what is. Have you ever had an experience like that?

The nearest to celebrating an anniversary that I come to is to celebrate my son’s birthday. Otherwise, it has been a long time since I celebrated any including my birthday.

Funny you should ask. I was looking at an old family photo album. In August, 1967 my family went on vacation. (I was 13). We came home to a flooded basement. Mom took photos (dated on the 16th). They installed a sump pump. Then August 8, 2011, I inherited the house and it flooded; the first time since then. Seems the sump pump had been unplugged! This year August 8, 2013… yes it flooded because the pump finally wore out. Can this be considered an anniversary? One I hope I can avoid happening again or ever!

We don’t actually celebrate anything, but we recognize all the dates & smile 🙂

We don’t always remember on the date in question. We did smile when we realized it’s been twenty years since we retired, though. And next year we will sooner or later realize we’ve been married 50 years. And smile. I agree, that’s a great way to honor the occasion.

Esther, Mother’s maid said “The ‘Celebration’ of the mine disaster is today.” She was referring to the 1940 West Virginia coal mine disaster. There were lots but that was the worst.

Not really. Carmen remembers the anniversary of us getting together and we celebrate that. Apart from that neither of us worry about birthdays or anniversaries.

From time to time, usually not on the date, but because something comes up in conversation I remember something that happened on a certain date, not always necessarily the right year…

I kinda of know when I was married, separated and things like that…I have to think much about when I finally went to University and when exactly I got my degree. Of course I know my birthday and then there are other things like national holiday ANZAC and Waitangi Day (NZ) or Xmas and Easter.

Every so often something gets set in concrete and almost religiously I do it every year until a year swings around and I can’t or I do something radically new.

We are now near to the day that causes a lot of problems for me and my friend…every year we did the same old, same old enjoyable 25th December and then it had to be changed when his health changed. We still haven’t formulated a regular thing… we have a standing invitation to join a family/friend gathering but so far we only have said “shall we go to Devonport?” – we have time on the matter but “will we!” 🙂
