Do you go to movies very often? I used to love to go when I was younger, but now I seldom go even though the theater is only about 100 yards/meters from our apartment. I don’t like to sit, so I view my movies and TV series through Netflix. That means I can use my NordicTrack treadmill or my stair stepper while I watch.
Andy went to see The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey last year and is planning to see the sequel, The Hobbit: Desolation of Smaug sometime this week. He’s going to the 2D version instead of the 3D. I asked him why, and he said he thought 3D was too gimmicky. Apparently he’s not alone on that, and there are other objections. This article that said in addition to being more expensive, 3D movies tend to be darker that the 2D versions and that they often give some people (especially those with eye imbalances like me) eyestrain and headaches. I did see the last Harry Potter movie in 3D two years ago, and I do remember it being darker than I would have liked. I thought the effects were interesting, but I didn’t like the movie itself that much so I’m not a fair judge.
What about you? Do you go to movies often? Have you seen any in 3D? If so, what did you think?
I do go to movies but really prefer to watch them at home on my home theater system. The cost of seeing them at home is much lower than going to a theater. I avoid seeing 3D because of the glasses that I have to wear over my glasses which I find quite uncomfortable.
What is your home theater system like? I’ll bet it’s quite different from mine.
i love movies. but must confess. most of them are the older ones i enjoy.
i recently saw thor . . . something or other. it was the second one. not my kind of movie normally. but the visual effects were stunning. and thor was too! LOLOL.
i’ll be seeing the new hobbit movie too. again. it’s almost worth all the endless BATTLES just to see the background. and i do love fantasy. always have. you know . . . “there are faeries at the bottom of my garden . . . ” type fantasy. not necessarily hobbit~eating dragons! LOL. but i do find them to be beautifully done.
i like small movies with good stories and good dialogue. few and far between these days. loved ALL nora ephron movies. but now sadly she’s gone from us.
3 D gives me a huge headache always. i stay well away from them.
and if i watched a movie while moving like you do . . . i would get nauseous!
like riding in a car now and trying to read. just can’t do it anymore! 🙂
I’m glad you’re going to the new hobbit movie too. I’m afraid I find battles boring and noisy — I always wear my ear protectors when I go to movies. That sounds like the old lady I am! I enjoyed the colors of the first couple of Harry Potter movies, but we saw them in another town. I was looking forward to seeing my first one in the then-new movie theater, but it was a disappointment. The quality of the picture was poor. Andy says he thinks it’s better now, but doesn’t know if he would call it good. I may pay my money and check it out for myself some day.
We went to a 3D movie in our little town theater & weren’t impressed but on a huge screen in Los Angeles it was Spectacular.
Funny note: The 3D glasses didn’t do a thing for the movie. We noticed that no one else was wearing the glasses. We were in the wrong “theater”. Moved to the right one but wasn’t like the Los Angeles experience.
I don’t think it’s just the size of the screen. It’s also the quality of the projection. Your comment reminded me of the fact. Thanks!
Where did I read that Jean uses her trampoline & stepper when on computer? Inspired me. Now I use my trampoline when watching TV moves at night. 🙂
OH I read it here on this post. And forgot the treadmill already. My short term memory has “left the building”. TV quote
I love it when I find some things I want to watch — I get more exercise that way. It’s gentle exercise, not aerobic.
Jenny and I sometimes go to the cinema at Queen’s University, Belfast. They show excellent films, the admission fee is low and there’s always a great atmosphere. With some performances, the film is introduced by someone connected with the film who gives some background info on how it was made etc, which can be fun.
I imagine that a university cinema would have better movies than most theaters. And having the extra information would be a real plus.
These day I don’t go to movies much at all. The shift to so many of them being the equivalent of cartoons – whether animated or not – has turned me off. As to what’s become of the Australian film industry – don’t get me started. (There are even people who think that that tosh “Australia” was a worthy film – that it should come to this!)
I haven’t like the 3D movies I’ve seen – they seem to like to induce vertigo or to shock or scare me, neither of which I like much.
I’m with you on not liking films that try to shock or scare us!
I have a friend who a big movie buff – from the way they are made, through to all the actors and of course the storyline. I had a whole string of “must see movies with him” a year so back but the dialogue from him, completely put me off the enjoyment. Then our leisure lives changed and I wasn’t unhappy on that…
We watched, not him, another friend, last Xmas Day the preview of The Life of Pi in 3D neither of us had ever done that before. We were near the screen/front and I kept thinking the water was going to flow out; tiger jump into my lap. We decided afterwards, “take or leave it” didn’t matter.
I have nothing to watch movies on at home other than my laptop which I quite like, I can spread out, put the pause on, I think once/twice I wound back – no ill effects for anything…
But it’s been awhile
I now watch TV channels, doco’s on my laptop when I get the idea…err remember!
It sounds as if your life is full enough without watching movies. That’s great.
It is a flat screen stand alone TV to which I have connected the set top box from the cable network and my DVD player with added three box speaker system. Very simple and inexpensive. I also see movies on my computer screen when I down load from the net. I have a 10″ by 15″ monitor which is quite comfortable.
My daughter’s family in Sweden has (for 10 or 15 years) an enormous screen that is pulled down to watch movies. Feels like I’m in a theater.
Thanks to both of you. I’m always curious.
