It wasn’t nearly as sunny yesterday, but we still had a great time.
We took a walk down to Beate and Tim’s. As you can see even the flat part of the road is starting to erode.
Towards the bottom the erosion is even worse. In spots the gullies are six to eight feet deep and two to three feet across. Andy, Kaitlin and Torben had no trouble jumping across them, but I didn’t hesitate to ask for a hand!
On the way home we saw a herd of about twenty elk to the right of us. Kaitlin was driving slowly just in case there was one on the left who wanted to join them. Sure enough one did. Torben took a couple of pictures with his iPhone.
All in all another great day.
December 30, 2013
I envy you.
We’re very fortunate.
the views from that cabin through those big windows . . . with the sunlight and all . . .
well. they’re simply lovely.
he needs some furniture up there! at least a little. lol.
i can’t believe those silly roads. what is a person to do! no wonder in olden days the mode was a trusty horse. he could pick his way through most anything.
how do beate and tim even drive out of there! ?
be careful my monk.
as i know you are. but one bad fall into a 6 foot crevice. oh my.
The eroded road was our old driveway. Part of it is in pumice so we had to fix it up every year. Andy had the new road/driveway built several years ago, so no one drives on the old one.
Beate and Tim’s road will probably need some work, but it shouldn’t be nearly as bad as this deserted one.
PS I was thrilled to see that you wrote a new post! Yay that you’re not giving up blogging!
You asked for a hand to cross the 8 ft ditches. I’d need a bridge. 😀
Never mind eyesight. The grass covers sticks, small logs, rocks & holes if the fire burnt stumps all the way down. NOT EASY walking.
The ditches were only a few feet across, so agile folks (not me!) just jump across them. I use a hand so when I land I don’t slip back and fall into the ditch but move forward away from it.
you’ve all forgotten the “elk” – something we wouldn’t ever have the chance to see here…the closest we might get to animals crossing are wild ducks or similar. Maybe the odd feral goat/s but that would be way down mid-island…I don’t even think the wild horses would be crossing anything like that either…
Those are stories I hope to write in the coming months about NZ and how various places are very interesting tourist and travellers spots with unusual features…
The wild horses spring to mind
Hi Jean,
