Grinchville?

balsam-centerpieceI recently read both an article and a post implying people who don’t decorate for Christmas are Grinches. Do you agree with that? My sole Christmas decoration this year was a balsam centerpiece that came in early December. It was losing its needles a few weeks later, so I tossed it. I could have put up the garland and lights I use when the weather is gloomy, but the weather was so sunny and energizing I didn’t need them. Instead I spent my time decluttering the apartment. It was an unconventional but great Christmas season. If that was Grinchville, I’m all for it.

Did you decorate for the holidays?

After many years, my home was decorated for Diwali. We were not particularly observant of many customs in our home, but the two daughters in law come from families with such traditions and we simply allowed them to do what they wanted. The first one did for three years, and the new one now did this for last Diwali.

I do not thin that not being very observant of traditions and customs is being grinchy.

Yes, we decorate, or, rather, Karen does. I set up the tree and make sure the lights are working. I also help her replace her wall hanging quilt with the one for the Christmas.

Today, Christmas seems so much more about commercialism and less about tradition.

As I’ve said before, we used to cut down a tree from our land for Christmas. Andy says it will be at least five years before we can do it again. I think he’s wildly optimistic. We’ll just have to see.

No, didn’t decorate tho’ we did get out the million red chili lights from a difficult storing place to store more accessibly. When I use them it’s dazzling.

I gave away our outdoor lights. I use to put them on the planting across the front of house but snow often covered them.

I knew dozens of people. Had lots of great friends. They’ve either died moved away, have cells so are no longer in phonebook/can’t locate them.

SOOOoooo you Jean, Mike, Cathy, Ramana, no particular order here, Evan, tammyj, whom have I left out? –are now my official FAMILY of FRIENDS.

I feel that way too. I think it was either tammy or Cathy that told the joke of the fellow who said about his laptop, “Be careful, all my friends are there.”

Put a wreath on the door, got out the Christmas mugs, hung some holiday towels, and bought a couple of poinsettias. That was our Christmas decor. However, I had to toss the poinsettia as one of the kittens decided to shred them. With no holiday guests or entertaining this year, I could see little use in making a big effort to decorate. So much has to be rearranged to make room for the decorations. My small amount of decor took very little time to dismantle and put away.

Those are my kind of decorations — ones that are easy to put up and take down. Thank you for taking the time to comment. 🙂

yes. i put up my little tree. it’s 3 feet tall. pre lit. tiny white lights. no ornaments.
it goes up thanksgiving afternoon and comes down on december 26th! that’s it.

We used to have a little table-top artificial tree with colored lights. When we started cutting down our own tree for the living room we put the artificial one in Kaitlin’s bedroom. She and I still have fond memories of it. It fit nicely on a shelf in a closet, but eventually it got so old I tossed it This was long after she left home. I would put it up now if we still had it. I bought another little one last year, but it wasn’t the same —- so I gave it away.

No. I don’t bother with Christmas much.

I enjoy time with friends and relaxing, decorations don’t do it for me.

  8. Cathy in NZ says:

I think the article was written by someone who has a problem with his profit margin because so few people are buying the standard Christmas or similar decor 🙂 “Grinches indeed”!

I forgot completely about what I should do about Christmas… I had so many other things happen which put in almost in a non-mood that it didn’t seem to matter. Anyone who came to the house was more astounded at the new furniture rejig in the living room 🙂

Right now if they came, they might be somewhat thinking I needed locking up as I’m surrounded with many large pieces of handwoven fabric – all wool! in Summer…

Surely it’s a matter of personal choice whether you put up decorations or not? When did it become some sort of social dictat? I can only say in reply to that – Just butt out! If you’re living on your own (like my 91 year old mother) what’s the point of putting up decorations?
