Congressional leaders left the White House on Wednesday “deeply frustrated” that President Obama had not found a swift resolution to the conflict between Sunnis and Shiites that began in the seventh century A.D.
—Andy Borowitz
Andy and I burst out laughing at this quote. What’s your reaction?
It looks as if the U.S. is pressuring Iraq to form a new, more inclusive government, probably without Maliki. That’s the only course of action that makes sense to me. Again, what do you think?

My first reaction was ‘Good Grief!’ and then the letters F,T,W but not in that order.
Maybe they could provide him with the magic wand they have been hiding in their back pocket for all these years.
Recovery from a civil warns means shaping a future that all have an investment in realising. Which will usually mean an inclusive government. Other things too. But a more inclusive government must be an excellent step forward.
We’ll have to see if the encouragement/pressure works. The Kurds may want their own state.
Ever since you introduced me to him, I have been following Andy Borowitz and this is one of his best! I wish that we had one like him here. We have great cartoonists but not someone as devastating as this in prose.
I agree. This one was brilliant!
What do I think?
We squandered a lot of lives, treasure, and time in Iraq. The current administration lacks the diplomatic and military credibility to now make a difference in Iraq.
Better to have no influence than to have created the mess with our over-optimism. I always thought Bush senior had his head screwed on straight. As a reward he was called a spineless wimp.
since you asked… and asked twice…
i think we never should have been there in the first place.
the squandered lives. treasure. (meaning the BILLIONS of dollars spent?) and time
should never have been lost.
they literally hate each other. the sunnis the shia’s the kurds … it is their country.
and it is their own hatred for each other that has gone on since BIBLICAL times…
how will a few misguided 2oth and 21st century politicians ever hope to solve it.
enough lives have been lost surely.
and if it’s about oil? which it most certainly is…
then it’s time americans cinched their belts and quit using so much.
i see huge SUV’s sitting idling … gas guzzlers… they never turn them off.
americans squander oil as if there’s no tomorrow.
well… for all the American soldiers who’ve lost their lives in that god forsaken land…
there truly is no tomorrow.
i say… ENOUGH.
we carry the flag at all these ceremonies for veterans … and we weep… and talk a good talk… i’m sick of the hypocrisy of the american public. we pretend to care deeply…
but we’re not willing to sacrifice some inconveniences here at home apparently.
ok. i’ll stop now.
but.. you did ask!
and the quote by borowitz? BRILLIANT! LOL.
I’ve heard it was at least $1 trillion. It’s about a lot more than oil now. If ISIS succeeds in creating its own state it will eventually come after the U.S. They will have a safe haven.
Power & Religion are the cause of wars. Even the Jehovah Witnesses are exclusive.
If you don’t follow their time-consuming regime, you are kicked-out, excommunicated.
Also pride and revenge. Each side remembers how it has suffered and wants to the other side to pay for it
I hesitate leaving a comment but…I will.
At the risk of sounding like an ostrich with my head in the sand.
I can’t wrap my brain around things like this.
There are so many layers, so many reasons and I am one ignorant person
who no one listens to anyway, so I choose not to think about it.
It’s not in my ability to effect any change.
I go about my day, trying not to do any harm
and scurry around and tend to my little life
as a storm continues to brew
and try not to worry about it but instead worry about how to make ends meet.
To me it’s like having a meteorite hurling towards Earth.
I have no power to change it and sadly no matter where it hits,
someone is going to be mortally hurt.
