More Roadwork

Andy and Orlando used a backhoe yesterday to clean out some culverts,

install a new culvert,

and move rocks in the drainage gully so they would be closer to the road, to protect the road from washing out.

They plan to do more culvert work today, and with any luck they’ll be finished with the roadwork for the year.

Do you see it stopping ever?

Who knows? Before the fire we only had to grade the road occasionally. (We haven’t done that yet — Andy hopes to do that next spring.)

This year was a lot better than last year, and hopefully it was because of the increased vegetation and not just a fluke. We need a lot more dead vegetation on the ground to soak up the rains, but all the new growth is a great improvement. We will let you know!

what if they carved out a huge ditch running along each side of the road . . .
you know… like the irrigation ditches in colorado.
then lined the ditches with stone that wouldn’t erode.
    then black topped the road!
sounds like a lot of money i know… but considering all the money that’s already been spent again and again … maybe it’s worth trying! that way when the water rushed down the mountain side … hopefully it would run into the ditch and down the manmade channel instead of washing out and across the road! i know. too simple! and would not work anyway probably.
but it felt so good saying it as a possibility! i just WISH it could work! 😀

The problem is that the dirt will rush down the mountain with the water, UNTIL enough vegetation holds the dirt down & keeps it in place.

In the pictures you can see the big gully on the side of the road for the water. And moving the stones is equivalent to lining it on the side next to the road. The culverts are to let the water flow under the road instead of across it.

Paving the road would help — Andy plans to do that as soon as we win the lottery. I suppose it would help if we bought a ticket!
