Mallard Fillmore

Yesterday’s Mallard Fillmore cartoon shows the duck reading the newspaper and looking frightened. The headlines are about Ebola, the Islamic State, the economy, etc., etc.

Mallard says,

Halloween seems a little superfluous this year.

Do you think he has a point? 😉

    Just this year?

It’s just another overly commercialized holiday.

One thing I’ve been noticing — around here they’ve mostly been skipping Thanksgiving and going straight from Halloween to Christmas. Yay, Thanksgiving!

I am not qualified to comment. We have just come out of our own festival season and before you know it, Christmas and New Year will be on us too.

Maybe U. S. is the only country celebrating Halloween??
Never mind what else is going on in the world, here are the reasons getting rid of Halloween is not a bad idea:

Candy is bad for bodies & teeth.
When you don’t get treat-or treaters YOU are left to eat the candy.
    Children shouldn’t go begging.
They shouldn’t think if you don’t have candy, they can do bad to your property.
There’s the fear of razorblades added. 😀
Places to entertain these kids have to be provided so they won’t treat-or-treat.
I could keep adding, but there’s other things to be done.

Halloween has always been superfluous. It’s just a weird bit of amusement that captures kids’ imagination and annoys the hell out of many other people. I agree totally with Bikehikebabe’s arguments against it. Unfortunately Halloween isn’t confined to the US but is increasingly popular in the UK as well.

My boys are crazy excited for Halloween, though they can’t tell you why. We don’t celebrate it and there’s no trick-or-treating here, but they seem to be overly thrilled with it.

I have found memories of it when I was a kid, even though we didn’t do that much. How do they know about it? Do they want to make costumes? Or?

I’m sorry it took me so long to answer. For some reason you were in my spam folder, and I hadn’t checked it in days. As you know, I’m a fan of your site. 🙂 Thank you for coming by.
