I Wish Them Luck!

According to a Washington Post article, Why Chipotle’s pork problem is a bad sign for its future, the restaurant chain Chipolte’s Mexican Grill has stopped serving pork items in about a third of its restaurants — one of its major suppliers wasn’t treating its pigs in a humane way. I was only vaguely aware of the chain, but it warms my heart that they are trying to serve “food with integrity” and that customers are willing to pay more for this attitude.

The article says the chain will have more problems like this as they expand their operations, because it will be harder to find suppliers that can meet their standards, but I wish them luck. Who knows? Maybe suppliers will take note.

On a similar note, I’m pleased our new local supermarket offers organic, free range chicken. I have mixed feelings that I can no longer buy my favorite organic dry milk. It has suddenly disappeared from the internet, and when I wrote to the company they said they can’t keep up with the demand for their products, so they dropped this one. If I used enough dry milk I could get it in 50-pound packages — way too large for me. I told them I was happy for them, even if it wasn’t good news for me.

So, as usual, the world is always changing, and not always for the worst.

I am not qualified to comment. I am a vegetarian. I became one 17 years ago for aesthetic reasons and have not regretted it.

i am SO glad to hear that about the chipotle chain.
now if all the big chains would do that . . . maybe the pitiful plight of the factory farm animals in the country would have a chance.
the ONLY way to change things for them is to hurt the pocket books of the producers who produce them. their consciences certainly aren’t affected. as long as they can make money things will not change. but chipotle has set an example.
    and . . .
i remember my gram mixing 1/2 powdered milk and 1/2 regular milk for us . . .
to make it go farther. she was very frugal. and it tasted just fine!

We used to use powdered milk all the time. We started when we had a small apartment in Ithaca and the refrigerator didn’t have room for all the regular milk we were drinking. We gradually used a greater percentage of reconstituted instant milk until we were drinking 100% of it. By then I liked it better. We switched back to regular milk when it was less expensive than the instant.

I liked my organic dry milk because they didn’t add vitamins A and D. Too much vitamin A is bad for the bones. It’s all very interesting!

I hope enough people vote with their pocketbooks to make a difference. I’m with you about factory farming.

I believe that a lot of milk in the quart/litre bottles are reconstituted from dried anyway…a few companies have it fresh as here.

I always through chipotle was a “spice” kind of thing. But then again that chain isn’t here in NZ. Every so often “animal food products” come under the fair trading…

Recently in NZ was a company saying that their eggs were free-range/organic and it was found they were not – selling to a major retail chain – making huge profits and so on! Leading the company & the consumer astray – and not a short time, but something like 5yrs!

    • Jean says:

Apparently chipotle is a chili pepper, the chain took its name from it.

I hope the egg scoundrels got fined for false advertising/fraud. I once read of a donut shop that advertised low-calorie donuts. People loved them, but the whole thing was a fraud. They tasted so good because they weren’t low-cal. The company rightly got in a lot of trouble.

I hope that Chipotle can motivate its suppliers to treat their pigs better. That would be a great outcome!

I saw a lamb being slaughtered.
