After several days of spring-like weather, Wednesday was a gray, snowy day. But the sun came out again yesterday.
Andy plowed the road up in the mountains, and the maintenance men plowed the driveways down here. Even though the temperature was below freezing, the snow in the sunshine started to melt.
Andy got a somewhat late start because driving up on the highway Wednesday, going only about 30 miles an hour because of the snow, the windshield suddenly developed a big crack.
We’re still scratching our heads over how that could have happened. Do you have any ideas?

Significant difference between the outside and inside temperatures must have cracked that.
We were surprised because we’ve had even greater temperature differences before.
I can only assume it was a rapid change in windshield temperature caused by the sunshine.
There was no sun that day, and no big bumps in the road. If it had happened on one of the dirt roads we would have understood.
It’s likely from a small flaw in the glass that propagated into a crack suddenly from stresses due to differential temperatures from wintery weather. The flaw could have been there for a long time, perhaps a ding from a stone or hail.
We agree there was a flaw in the glass. It was just the timing that surprised us. No big deal, but interesting.
I would guess some sort of stress fracture due to a possible flaw in the glass combined with a rapid change in temperature. Is there a vent that blows across the windshield at that point?
The conditions weren’t unusual, so we suspect the was some randomness involved.
it’s all been said.
my only addition is . . . OH DARN IT!
xo?
It was a nuisance, but not a big one. Andy got up to the land in plenty of time to plow. Little ones like this are a lot more fun than big nuisances! Like the fire.
hope you have had it fixed…you don’t need to continue on it’s personal “cracking” journey and decide to shatter over Andy/passengers…
He had a new windshield put in before he drove up to the land to plow. I see I said he made a late start but neglected to say it was because he had the problem fixed.
