I smiled at this cartoon. I haven’t said “Star light, star bright….” in years, but it brought back happy memories. Did you ever say it and make a wish?

Yes, I used to say it every chance I had as a kid.
I hate to tell you what I wished for though, because you are sure to think me totally insane. Or maybe it’s a bit of insight as to why I’m the nut I am today.
Sigh.
Even now when I go to say it, the last part is so automatic that I can’t get a current wish in there to replace my childhood one.
(I wanted a German Shepherd puppy).
Those stars never listened though.
I desperately wanted a dog when I was a kid, too, And I never got one. So much for stars. 😉
Cindy and Jean, that is heartbreaking.
Both of you should have done what my youngest sister did. I think MY middle name is Persistence/Perseverance, my sister’s? I don’t know. She wore down my father in her quest for a dog by leaving endless little notes on his desk. Every night. Without fail. The rest of the family (apart from my mother) actually started to feel sorry for him. It took a while but eventually he broke. And thus she got her miniature Dachshund, a truly sweet little “Tinie” as Cornelia called her. Did she ever wish on a star? I doubt it. To this day she believes in the steady drip drip drip to hollow a stone.
As an aside from my (the much older and therefore above everything sister) vantage point: The whole saga had a rather unfortunate knock-on effect on my two sisters’ relationship. There was a rivalry between them which I never experienced. So, naturally, my other sister who probably wanted, I don’t know, something she didn’t get, is aggrieved to this day. It’s ridiculous. But there it is.

I don’t recall that saying at all – but I do often drift of to sleep – nowadays – dreaming of something that would be great to have, to do, and so forth.
Some days I wake up with quite a different take on the matter, other days nothing comes to mind!
Just because we’re sleeping doesn’t mean the subconscious mind isn’t working. And thinking of something before we drop off is a good way to plant seeds. I don’t do that because my mind gets too busy and wakes me up with different possibilities. It interferes with my sleep. 🙁
Confession, I used to make that wish and hope. But I’ve not thought of that rhyme in a long time either, and so I’ve not made a wish. I’ll have to next time, you never know!
I was curious about how widespread the idea was. Thanks. 🙂
i love what the little dog says in the last block. an airplane! LOL. snap!
Things have changed a lot since we were youngsters. 🙂
My dear Jean, true to form and as you may expect from me: I do not need a star to make a wish. If the need overcomes me I’ll make a wish in the middle of the day come rain or sunshine, or in the darkest of nights.
However, thanks for the laugh – I can relate to mistaking a plane for a (somewhat strangely in a hurry) star. Come to think of it, where I come from I am pretty sure it’s only a SHOOTING star you are invited to pin your hopes on.

For me it was more the excitement of seeing the first star appear than the actual wish. I can still capture that feeling of wonder.
No. There isn’t anything like this in any of the Indian languages either. We were of course brainwashed into praying to our personal deities for whatever we wanted and sometimes that worked!
We did not have to pray for a dog. We grew up with dogs.
Lucky you about the dogs. 🙂
Cindy and Jean. I think you were supposed to cross your heart as well. Maybe fingers and toes too. I wished for everything when I was a kid. Still do. Only now we call it manifesting!
The wishes I make now are more of the motivational kind — they rely on me doing my part. They’re fun too. 🙂
