Thanks for the laugh, Jean. A good way to start a Saturday.
Trust the Germans to invent something as evil (though admittedly it does have its uses) as Velcro.
A long distant memory are the Angel’s first shoes (I have kept them – yes, really). He graduated pretty quickly to tying laces. And then there was that sticky ball game – a catch patch the size of a frisbee and a ball – the aim of the game to catch the ball which then, naturally, would stick to the catch pat. I don’t know why but it always reminded me of those ghastly sticky tapes that used to hang in farmers’ kitchens (not least in Bavaria) to catch flies. I am sure it was an efficient way to decimate their numbers but a pretty sight it most certainly was not.
You know – apart from sticky – the worst part of Velcro? It’s the noise it makes when you rip apart the “male” “female” bits. That sound grates with me.
Answering your question: There is currently no Velcro in my vicinity. However, and thank you so not for planting a terrible thought, there may come a time when I won’t be able to tie anything and – at an age when I can’t get much older – will have to resort to using Velcro once more.
How about you? Do you find Velcro useful or just plain annoying and infantalizing?
I have velcro on my sandals and it’s more useful than buckles, but the velcro tends to wear out faster than the sandals do. That’s a nuisance. I also have some on pockets on my L. L. Bean shirts. I use those pockets a lot, so the velcro is a nuisance.
I do think it is amazing stuff, and I’m impressed by the fellow who invented it. Annoyed by burrs? What’s the opportunity here? A man after my own heart.
I use a little strip of it to keep my vacuum cord in place when I have looped it to the cleaner for storing. does that make sense? it’s very handy for that.
I’ve used Velcro plenty of times but I am not a fan of it. It was wonderful on my sandals when I had my knee replacements done because I could use a grabber to put on and take off my shoes. But for other applications now, I prefer 3M’s Command Strips because they don’t grab onto every piece of fuzz that comes into their vicinity.
I have a couple of pairs of sandals the back straps of which fasten with velcro, though I think that they are Indian made equivalents and not the original velcro. The latter’s patent ran out some twenty or so years ago and there are any number of me toos in the market.
I think the only bit of velcro I have is on my umbrella-tie. I love velcro, it’s so simple, much more practical than shoelaces which keep either knotting or coming undone – whichever you don’t want them to do.

That’s a great use for it. I also have some little strips to hold tall plants — like amaryllis — to a stake to keep them from drooping.

Thanks for telling me about Command Strips. I will have to keep them in mind.
I sold Velcro in India for a while!
They are a great boon.

It’s a great invention. Thanks for letting us know you once sold it.
umbrella tie thing has velcro – cords on some things – etc
but can be a nuisance if they don’t grip propperly or grip onto something else…seems they have an affection with a non-mate!
It does eventually wear out, and it is a nuisance when it chooses to stick to the wrong thing.

And now the original comment has mysteriously appeared!
I’m sorry about the nuisance for you!
