There is a version of events in which a hurricane wreaking historic devastation on a major American city calls bitterly divided leaders to a common purpose. In that version of events, the urgency of the crisis not only rallies bipartisan support behind an expensive recovery operation, it also compels policymakers to set aside disputes over measures to keep the government open and lift the debt ceiling that they must pass next month.
We are not living in that version of events.

Sorry if this post seem like a downer, but the last line made me laugh. Fingers crossed that the author is wrong! This month is going to be consequential, so at the very least it will be interesting.
I wish that the writer had given the version of events in which we are living.
We will see it for ourselves soon enough. http://www.businessinsider.com/congress-schedule-debt-ceiling-shutdown-obamacare-faa-chip-2017-9
Yes, it could get very interesting.
What a mess! Then there is North Korea and Hurricane Irma.
At least you have a functioning government. There’s been no functioning government in Northern Ireland since January, after a political row over a botched green heating scheme. The British government is filling the gap, but unfortunately they’re making huge cuts to the NHS and other public services.
