That reminds me of a verse I read in the Wall Street Journal over 40 years ago:
I wish I could retain,
By some Herculean feat,
As much of what I read
As I do of what I eat.
My hats off the to author, whoever he was. I have retained that one even after all those years.

Our daughter used to ask me, “How do you KNOW that?” To which I usually answered, “It must have been in one of the books I’ve read.” My mind, apparently, retains some pretty odds facts from amongst all the fiction I’ve read.
It’s interesting what sticks and what doesn’t, isn’t it? So we should tell Earl read for pleasure and if it sticks it sticks, if it doesn’t it doesn’t. We’ve had a good time anyway.
I love it. “how do you KNOW that!” LOLOL.
I seem to be forever quoting stuff now. and yet I too can never remember exactly where I read it. and no doubt I am quoting it wrong!
the older I get the more I just remember the ‘gist of things.’
and I like your attitude monk…
“if it sticks it sticks, if it doesnโt it doesnโt. Weโve had a good time anyway.”
ditto! ๐
That one made a huge impression on me and it stuck. Also a New Yorker cartoon of two prisoners shackled to the wall of a dungeon, one saying to the other, “I have a plan!” Yep, that’s me. ๐
I can identify totally with Earl and also the poem.
