The flip phone is having a mini-resurgence as consumers seek less distraction. Call it a rejection of the smartphone with its bombardment of messaging and social media that sap your attention. Or maybe it’s just a return to the cell phone’s roots, when a phone was just a phone.
“This year’s hottest cultural trend is none other than the humble flip phone,” wrote The Outline this week.
—Flip phones are back: Less distracting and a lot cheaper than a smartphone
Who would have guessed Andy and I would ever be fashionable?
May 14, 2018
that trend has been here at a least a year – I remember my flip phone – but the “flip lid” in the end was it’s undoing…and when I needed a new phone, the flip was “out” 🙂
We’re hoping we can still get them when ours wear out. Fingers crossed!
I kept my flip phone until I became a solo snowbird in 2011. My T-mobile phone was not going to work everywhere I traveled so Dave bought a new phone and gave me his old one. Verizon is the carrier most RVers use as their territory is the biggest.
We have Verizon, but it still doesn’t work well up in the mountains.
well hallylooyuh! that’s somehow a very nice thing to hear! LOL!
Yes. 😀
Cathy in NZ mentioned flips being back – same thing happening here in Australia.
I only got rid of my perfectly good Samsung one just a few years ago. For the reason I was finding the teeny tiny buttons hard to manage – and writing a text took forever- so a cheap ‘big sized’ more modern phone came to me. Has all the bells and whistles but they are never used.
Had to get a cover for it….. I missed the safety factor of the flip….screen well protected. The size does make it a nuisance at times…..no slipping it into tiny trouser pockets
We don’t text much, mostly just the time to check the connection, sometimes a very short message so it’s not so bad. And Andy loves the fact it’s small and protected in his pocket.
I don’t even know what a flip phone is (apart from the fact it flips of course).

tried to post you a link “nick” but robot here having none of it!!!
They were accidentally marked as spam. Sorry about that! I just saw them now and approved them. Thanks for the link.
My husband still uses his flip phone—he hates texting, and has no use for taking pictures with a phone, so it serves the purpose for him.And since he doesn’t care what others think, he just ignores the eye-rolling when he uses it! And yes, it’s cheaper, and easier to carry, so win. win! But I switched when I could no longer read the numbers on my old flip.
There’s a trade off between size and readability. Andy can still read his and loves that it’s small enough to slip into his pocket.
As I had mentioned sometime ago in another context, my first choice of communication is still the good old landline. Other than to see WhatsApp messages and emails I do not use the smartphone for anything other than the occasional internet search for something or the other.
Incidentally, flip phones can be smart too!
They’re really great for people who travel a lot. That is not us!
