We went up to the land last night for a couple of walks and a picnic supper. On the way back we saw some deer coming down the road so Andy stopped. The video isn’t high quality, but it shows the deer coming towards the car and being completely relaxed about our presence. They didn’t leave until Andy started the car and started driving forward.
There was some bad news — Beate and Tim told us about a fire along the road that most of the residents use up there. And we received an email that included,
There is a small fire in the Graduation Flats area, near the first cattle guard. Fire Trucks are on the scene. You will probably have to use Del Norte pass from the Caldera to get home.
There also appears to be one or two other small fires on the far west side of the Valles Caldera National Preserve and maybe Thompson Ridge
Here’s a picture I took on the way home:
Fingers crossed the fire fighters can put them out quickly.
maybe easier now to put out a fire, not so many trees to catch alight…but yes fingers x-ed on the matter
oh the deer are gorgeous – love how they are so alert to “the other big object” as if “is that one of those giant deer, we hear about…” “okay, that object is still and not coming to get us…let’s just meander around here, a bit longer…” (giant deer/you and andy/vehicle)
Yes, it’s in the burn scar, which helps a lot. Also the lack of high winds and the recent rain means it’s not a big worry. It’s already 60% contained. They can’t go in too close because of the danger from the dead trees. As we all know, they do fall from time to time. 😀
oh my! the eyes and the ears.
they’re all so beautiful. i hope they’re not covered with ticks.
they’re apparently very bad this year. at least they are here.
i hope the fire is contained and put out quickly!
I agree, the eyes and the ears. And the curiosity — what is that thing??
The fire is 60% contained and hasn’t grown from the 15 acres they said this morning. The recent rain helped, it’s within the burn scar from our 2011 fire, and the wind isn’t bad.
The deer around here don’t have tails like that!
How odd.
Hmmm
Glad the fire is under control.
And that the deer and everyone else will be safe.
They are mule deer, not white tailed deer. We’re glad too about the fire.
Deer are fascinating creatures and you are fortunate to have them around at such close quarters. I hope that the fire does not spread.
Thank you. I’m not worried about this particular fire, but the season has just started.
