Road Conditions

The snow is still melting, there is water flowing in the del Norte Canyon stream:

It’s still a bit snowy down by the brown gate and the beginning of Woodcutters Road.

But if part of the road dries out some more, Andy may be able to drive closer to the house:

At first he would park at this turn-around-place about four-tenths of a mile from the house so he wouldn’t tear up the rest of the road too badly.

Of course, these pictures were taken yesterday, and it snowed last night. The snow here has melted already, but we’ll have to see if it changed things much up there.

How wintry, and what a feeling of successful (hard-working) adventure to get up to the house.
Is it usual for you to have snow in early March? It’s so clear and sunny on the island today that I get startled when I see the last lingering patches of snow along our roads (it’s been over 2 weeks since the Big Storm.)
How many steps are in each flight of stairs, according to your machine? I’m curious about the total. The last time I went up a many-step slope, in Croatia, it was only 250 or so. But you did….what, 500? yesterday. Congratulations!

We’ve had quite a few dry winters, so the snow is unusual for the new pattern. As I recall, we used to get a lot of snow for about the first 20 years we had the land. We were snowed out, except for walking or snowshoeing in, most winters. I’ll have to check with Andy about when we could usually drive in again. I do remember driving up there for a picnic with David and Jane (and Becky?) one Memorial Day weekend and getting some snow flurries, but that sticks in our minds because it was unusual.

I have no idea how many steps they count as a flight of stairs. I tried Googling it and apparently different brands use different numbers, so they say don’t try to compare, just notice if you are improving on the machine of your choice.

Andy says in the old days we could usually start driving in around the first week or so of April.

I did the 40 floors on the stair stepper today — it says one floor is 10 feet. I took it easy because my cough isn’t quite over yet.

PS Andy says they’re predicting more snow. We will let you know if you should bring your snowshoes. 😀

  2. We have as much snow here in Michigan as you do where it is that you’re at. But the days are getting longed and the sun is getting brighter so I’m hopefull I’ll get warm by July.

How far north are you in Michigan? My daughter went to graduate school in Ann Arbor, and we visited the UP once when we visited her. There’s quite a difference!

  3. I’m west and north of Ann Arbor in the general area of Grand Rapids. Our weather is influenced by Lake Michigan so we get a lot of lake effect snow in my part of the state.

I can see why Andy doesn’t attempt to drive all the way up. Is that road only wide enough for one vehicle? It doesn’t look any wider than that in the pictures.
