Alarm Clocks

For me, one of the great joys of being retired is I seldom have to set the alarm. How do you feel about alarm clocks?

I use my cell phone for my alarm clock and it is the most dreaded feature on the phone. I hate being woke up by an alarm and each morning when it screams at me to get out of bed I mentally count how many days till my next day off when I won’t have to listen to it.

  2. Mike says:

We seldom use an alarm. Even the last few years I was working as a contractor, I almost never used it as my hours were usually in the afternoon and evening. Now, we only use it if there is an unavoidably early appointment, such as a recent out patient surgery we drove our daughter to in Ft. Smith.

  3. I hate setting an alarm clock. When I do I can’t sleep for fear I’ll miss hearing it.

I don’t like having to set mine, but so far I haven’t had trouble hearing it. I’m happy about that because it isn’t very loud so it’s not jarring.

Mr McVey my English teacher in my senior year taught us at the beginning of the year how to ‘set our mental alarm clocks!’ I think he did it as his own controlled experiment with us. and for most of us it was effective!
it’s one of the few things I ever learned that has lasted me my entire grown up life. I have used it even while working. and short of being maybe one or two minutes off… it has ALWAYS worked! the few times it missed were my own fault. forgetting to set it!
but you’re absolutely right! NOT having to worry about time when you’re retired is one of the best perks I know! LOL! I don’t even set my mental alarm anymore! ( I tested it last month just to make sure I still could do it and … right on the dot!) I love you Mister McVey… wherever you are. maybe you’re with Mrs Calabash!

It used to be that when I set my alarm I would wake up 5 minutes before it goes off. Now, I toss and turn all night for fear I won’t hear the alarm. Mine starts low then gets louder as time passes without me turning it off. With my deteriorating hearing, I worry I won’t hear it, Dave will get irritated and turn it off for me, then I will turn over and go back to sleep. That sounds so much like something that would happen here.

    • Jean says:

      That’s horrible! πŸ™

I sometimes (used to, not so much any more) have trouble sleeping if I have an early appointment, but it’s not because I won’t hear the alarm clock. I just don’t like having appointments because I have to think about them — they weigh on my mind.

  6. I rarely set my phone alarm – as most days I’m mentally awake around 6-7am – especially here at Willlerton (workers cars unit 2)….but I sometimes set it for 9am so I have technically 10 mins to leave to get the bus…OR I look at getting really ready and then leave asap – if I starting “doing something…” I always forget I’m going out…

    • Jean says:

Yes, that’s me! Getting involved in something. That’s why appointments weigh on my mind some. I have to remember them.

I seldom use an alarm clock now, either, since I retired. When I do I set my cell phone and a tiny little inexpensive rectangular novelty clock I bought off the net just for fun with one I have yet to send my young grandson.

I have a kitchen timer device I set in the living room occasionally during the day if I’m around the house and have an appointment later in the day I want to be sure I’m alerted to in time to get ready, then travel there.

    • Jean says:

My alarm clock is a little travel one I bought years ago. I like it because it rums on one AAA battery and can’t make much noise. πŸ˜€

Alarm clocks are essential if I’ve got an early start to go somewhere. But normally I wake up very early anyway so I seldom need an alarm. I’m sure people who are still sound asleep absolutely hate being suddenly woken up and having to trudge off to work.

    • Jean says:

I hated it when I was working because I had insomnia. I would wake up around 4 and not get back to sleep until around 6. The I would be sleeping soundly when the alarm went off at 7. I don’t miss it! Either the insomnia or the alarm.

  9. Cindi says:

I have alarms set on my phone with different tones.
The first goes off at 5 am and it’s not too loud or annoying and so far I’ve always gotten up and have never gone back to sleep.
But just in case, I have a much louder and rather shrill one set for 5:05.
And…. because I worry that I might forget to have the alarms β€œon”, I have a little travel battery clock set for 5:30.
On days off when the alarms are off, the dogs wake me at 6, if not before.
I can hardly wait until I’m retired and have no alarms and the dogs reconditioned to a later time.
    Sigh.
