May Flowers, and Blossoms

The cool weather doesn’t seem to have hurt Torben’s daffodils or the blossoms on our Gravenstein apple tree.

Needless to say we’re happy about that.

  1. Glad your apple trees weren’t damaged. The apple growers around me were worried about the froze a few nights ago and were using the smoke pots or whatever they’re called them to help keep the trees safe.

My heart goes out to them. Our plumber says his father grew apples and told him no matter what he did, don’t become an apple grower. They are always fighting nature, and when they do have a good year everyone else does too so the price they get for their apples goes down. πŸ™

  2. Sure hope you have a wonderful apple harvest in fall.
    Coffee is on

  3. it’s that “warm fence” that has helped them – electricity on the wires encloses them in love πŸ™‚

    • Jean says:

No electricity, just the big chain link fence and the hardware cloth to protect the roots and keep the mice in winter from girdling the trees and killing them.

    • I wasn’t saying that there was real electricity – a joke as such that the wires and air produced an electricity that stopped the cold affecting the plants enclosed…you know imaginary forces carried by fairies..

    • Jean says:

I like the idea of fairies better. The poor plants up there need something like that. πŸ˜€

  4. Ann Thompson says:

I always worry about plants that have already blossomed when a frost comes along.

  5. Diane Dahli says:

Surprisingly, plants do better in moist, cool weather than they do when it is dry and hot. It seems that no amount of watering can help when the sun blazes away! Of course, that’s not true if it threatens to freezeβ€”then it’s the end of them for the season. I covet your deer fence. Wish I had one, but they are not allowed on condo property!

    • Jean says:

We’ve had a lot of trouble with plants when hot winds blow. It sucks all the moisture from them.

Actually, the chain link is for the bears. We originally had barbed wire fences which worked for the deer, but the bears had no problem busting through them.

  6. Cindi says:

    I love apple trees.
    They are so pretty!
I worried when we had the cold spell here but thankfully the trees and lilacs bloomed.
I’m wondering, could Andy plant some bee attracting flowers?
    Would that help?

    • Jean says:

We have bees up there and Andy saw quite a few a couple of weeks ago, but they hunker down in the hive when the weather gets cold.

  7. The OP Pack says:

Apple blossoms are so pretty. Mom loves the Spring when there are so many varied blossoms appearing every week.
