Clearing a Defensible Space I

As I mentioned last April, Torben, Kaitlin, and Andy—mostly Torben — were trying to clear a defensible space around the shed and house for fire protection. The idea was to reduce the fuel load from the dead trees by making slash piles they could burn in the winter. Unfortunately two winters ago it was too dry so it wasn’t safe to have a bonfire, and last winter we were snowed out so we couldn’t do it then.

So we hired Joe and his crew to clear the area. This is what they did Thursday:

More tomorrow about clearing the area closer to the house.

  1. nice job, though the landscape still looks pretty darn dry…

    Very interesting
So what you are saying is that they burn anything that will easily burn close to the house?

    • Jean says:

No, they moved the bushes and fallen trees down the hill and away from our structures, so if they burn they shouldn’t burn the house and greenhouse down. The shed is more vulnerable because Andy has some little evergreens he’s trying to grown and he worried they would be hurt if the guys cleared around them. The shed is made of wood and we might make it more fireproof in the future.
