A New Vocabulary Word

I get daily emails from wordgenius.com with the vocabulary word of the day. I usually ignore them, but I was taken by this one.

I knew what the word meant, but I had never used it. It’s old-fashioned, but a welcome change from all the swearing we hear now, so it will be the title of tomorrow’s post.

It is a fun word. I have seen it played once on Words with Friends – nice point value I wish had been mine.

  2. There’s one I haven’t heard in a long time. It is kind of fun to say

  3. Rose Swalls says:

I am embarrassed to say I had not really thought about what it meant…

  4. Excellent!!!!

    Very ‘Olde English’!!!!

    Very cool…

    ~smile~

  5. good lord – couldn’t imagine that saying that about the “rain that just suddenly arrived” – not that I would say “good lord” either…more likely nowadays to say “4 seasons in one day” or “blast forgot my brolly” “I’m going to get soaked to the bone”

    • Jean says:

“Good Lord” is the term I usually use, and I can see someone using gadzooks if the rain was unusual and unexpected. That’s not true for you. If we were suddenly rained on we would be more apt to say, “Hurray!”

  6. Ginny Hartzler says:

I LOVe words, and I like this one. I actually use the shortened form of it all the time: Gads!

  7. Bruce Taylor says:

Ah, yes, I have used this word many times over the years. Does that mean I’m getting old? Gadzooks!

  8. Gadzooks! A mighty fine word. LOL

  9. Hootin' Anni says:

Gadzooks! What a word. It’s been eons since I’ve even heard it. You say “good lord”…I say “oh lordy” or “lord love a duck” oftentimes.

  10. Myra says:

A welcome change, indeed! Let’s see if we can’t make it go viral. πŸ™‚

  11. Madsnapper says:

I have heard the word and even used it a couple of times I got familiar with it because I used to read a lot of historical novels that used it cuz it’s really really old word

  12. tammy j says:

LOL! “β€œblast forgot my brolly” good one Catherine!
I’ve always thought of gadzooks as a word that a cartoon character says.
I don’t know where I got that idea. an old comic strip perhaps? I even can see the picture in my mind. he wore spats. YES! he wore spats and said gadzooks! lol
I don’t think I’ve actually ever used it. but I’m familiar with it.
I tend to say Great Scot! if I’m really appalled or even if I’m really impressed.
if I’m swearing I finish it off with Great Scot and Cat House Thursday.
don’t even ask me. I just made it up one day. and it stuck.
now that I think of it… that’s kind of silly to use it for both good AND bad.
    oh well. Gadzooks! πŸ˜€ xo
