This isn’t the gadzooks I was going to write about today, but I had two incidents yesterday involving technology. The first was when I was outside the endodontist’s office, dutifully trying to phone in. Oops! I seldom turn on my phone any more…I text Andy every day from my computer and leave my cell phone off to keep the battery charged. It works fine until I actually want to make a call. I had a long list of text messages waiting for me, and the phone wouldn’t let me do anything until it spewed them all out. I ended up knocking on the door and apologizing. They were very gracious about it..one advantage of being old is people often give you passes.
Note to self — turn on the phone at home first if you think you will need to use it when you’re out.
The second glitch was our smoke alarm in the bedroom going off around 5:45 this morning. I got up, buried it in the living room under layers of a blanket and let it die down by itself. Andy used to keep the batteries up to date, but that has slipped along with some other things. Everything takes longer than it used to, so there are always a lot at the bottom of our to-do lists.
I’m guessing changing the batteries will move up on Andy’s list, and I gave up on to-do lists years ago. Relabeling them “possibility” lists works better for me. It’s more realistic.
Anyway, plenty of chances to use gadzooks!

Oh, my goodness…you have just made my day. I love ‘possibilty lists!’ I guess I could use that or ‘might get done’ lists.
I’ve been doing that for years…it relieves a lot of pressure and the really important things get done. 🙂
I am lost without a to-do list even if everything doesn’t get done. But the idea of a possibility list is appealing:)
I have a macbook and have “messages” loaded on my laptop so I can get messages there as well as on the phone.
The nice thing about writing things down is it relieves the pressure of having to remember everything. The nice thing about framing it as “possibility” is it relieves the pressure of feeling we have to get everything done. 🙂
Gadzooks Girl! it has come just in time for our Cindi’s GREAT news!
it’s perfect. joyously happy! she’s winning the fight. GADZOOKS! xo
and on a calmer note… I too like your new “possibility list!” LOL.
that’s more my speed.
Yes that’s great news about Cindi! Fingers crossed it continues.
This happened to us, in the middle of the night. It was a ten year alarm, and it’s ten years were up!I Suggested throwing it out in the backyard. But Phil finally found a screwdriver solution to deactivate it.
We had a carbon monoxide one like that once but will never buy that kind again. The alarm kept going and going until Andy dismantled it. This smoke detector’s problem was the battery was almost four years old and needed to be replaced. We will now replace the batteries in all of them and no doubt do that more frequently in the future. 🙂
I have an ongoing grocery list – that lives on the refrigerator – that I add to bit by bit of items “running out” – but of course, when I decide to order online, like I’ve done this arvo, I take it down in the morning and start adding to it…
I just found that “list” I made at L/1 about what I needed to get in – one of which I had planned to buy that Thurs and of course Wed @ noon, we swanned back to L/3 – and that list item is not deemed essential – nor was it something I could just buy online as I need to try it on…
the rest of the items on that list…not VIP and definitely not essential but will be useful to have – when I feel I can tackle the whole shopping stuff again!
Right now, I have something coming up in around 12 days time which is rather VIP as there is to be schedule power outage, possibly all day…something about replacing a transformer in my area. So I know I’ve got to get organised earlier rather than later… 2 emails one from my power company and one from the line service…
you’ve definitely hit the nail on the Gadzook over the last few days…
Same here! Good luck!
I like that, I need a possibility list.
I would never have given that a thought about turning the phone on ahead of time. I would have had the same problem you did
Live and learn about cellphones. 🙂
OK these are truly Gadzooks Moments… i use old age a lot when something like this happens and you are right, we get a pass for old age.. it is frustrating though. i once had the text coming in and the phone rang and i could not figure out how to answer it. had to call the person back. now y question is, if all those text came in, do you not answer texts? do the people know this? maybe a gadzooks post about this question. i listened to the fishtale song and laughed long and hard, it is new to me but i fully understand how it could get hung in the head, that peppy beat is still ringing in my ears.
The texts are from Andy’s Garmin when he sends a message as he leaves the land and from Kaitlin’s pups’ Whistle trackers. I also get the texts as emails, so I should probably just disable them for my phone. I seldom use the phone which is why I haven’t bothered.
Lightning took out our modem on Tuesday, so now we are using our wifi mobile hotspots on our phones to access the internet on our computers. Unfortunately, everything seems to slow down as the day progresses and more and more people start streaming videos and movies.
We’re 3 years into our 10-year smoke alarms, so we’ve got a while before we have to deal with it.
I’ve never heard of 10-year smoke alarms. We had a CO detector like that and when it expired we couldn’t shut the alarm off without dismantling it. We would have thrown it into the Dempster dumpster to get the noise out of the apartment but it was so loud we didn’t want to disturb the neighbors. We are now sticking to detectors with batteries. 🙂
What a super idea, changing the “To Do” to a softer “Possibility” list. I feel better already 🙂
I agree about (most) people being nicer to us ‘old folks.’ Even with his aids, Tom’s hearing is declining by the day. Instead of becoming impatient, however, there’s been a real outpouring of kindness from everyone from the V.A. to Wal-Mart. Now, I have to re-remind him about that smoke detector! 🙂
🙂
I like the idea of a possibilty list. Makes a whole lotta sense. Our smoke alarms go off when I cook (just kidding)
Sorry I didn’t answer this sooner! Your comment should have been published right away because you have commented before, but that part of the software isn’t working correctly any more…now I have to manually approve some of them. I love your joke! That actually happened to a friend once.
