Chuffed

chuffed: (British) quite pleased; delighted
Example: He is chuffed to be back in Welsh rugby.

I have been watching The Great British Baking Show, which is where I learned the term chuffed. And I had a chance to use it last night.

Andy wanted to replace a book, White’s Handbook of Chlorination and Alternative Disinfectants, that was destroyed in the 2011 fire. Oops! It was $175 new as a hardback on Amazon, so he spent some time looking for a less expensive version. The ones that were a more reasonable price were older versions, which he didn’t want, so he decided it wasn’t worth it and gave up the search.

I asked him what information he wanted from it, and he said the concentration and exposure times. So I searched for

concentration exposure time disinfecting water

and came up with sites to look at. We ended up downloading the 200-page pdf version of the Environmental Protection Agency’s Water Treatment Manual: Disinfection. Andy will look through it to see if he can find what he wants. If not, we will try something else.

I continue to be chuffed by the information available at our fingertips.

You are so right. It never ceases to amaze what I can find on the Internet. So much really good information and often accompanied by very good video instructions. What did we do before?

Glad you were able to find what Andy needed.

I don’t take it for granted and have some contingency plans in case things change. One never knows, the world is going to be changing a lot more.

I love all the information is at our fingertips…only about two or three things I have not been able to eventually find.

We watch a lot of British shows on P.B.S. They say this word a lot, and I still did not know what it means! So this is great, thanks!! Now I know! Since it is a British expression, I did not think it would help to look it up, silly me!

Way to think outside the box!
I’m sitting here saying ‘chuffed’ aloud, and realize it feels pretty good to enunciate.

Your title definitely caught my attention! I enjoy trying to think up catchy titles for my blog posts:) My 14 yr. old granddaughter is having to read LORD OF THE FLIES (which I read as a freshman or sophomore in college) and it has a lot of British slang in it which we both have a hard time figuring out sometimes! I hated that book in college and finding I still hate it!!!! It’s such a dark book. I hate that she is 14 and having to read it:( Wish they still read the classics instead. By the way, in case you ever want to buy some second hand books I have found a good site: http://www.betterworldbooks.com I have ordered from them 3 or 4 times now. I love their “story” so if you check them out be sure to read that.

  6. It’s amazing what we can find online. I’m in the process right now of selling some 1800s books and have noted that some of them have been publishing page-for-page on university sites.

  7. Yep, chuffed is a word that might often be used here…and even though it didn’t spring quite to mind, on yesterdays install here. I’m now chuffed that the heat pump that has also aircon is on and cooling my living room – as I had to go out in the middle of the day and came back to a bit of hot box….A gentle air flow is surrounding me…

and good to hear, you found what you were looking for – without parting with many $$, just time

    Great new word.
It’s amazing how easily we can find things out now. There are lots of times at work that someone will ask me something and my answer is “I don’t know, lets ask Google”

  9. Hootin' Anni says:

I am chuffed you were chuffed! That makes two chuffed…and three chuffed if your hubby finds what he needs!

I am with you 100% about the internet and all the amazing things we can find by searching! So glad you found something he can use and I hope it works out but if it doesn’t I am sure there is still something else out there that will. That is absolutely crazy that the book cost that much money
