Years ago Andy would sometimes come home and say he spooked a few elk. He would hear a crashing in the bushes and walk over and see them running away.
That was neat, but once when I was walking down to the garden I heard a crashing off to my left. Instead of walking towards it, I walked away, figuring it could be a bear. Did I lose my chance to see elk? Actually not. A few minutes later I heard Andy excitedly shout,
Hey, Jean! Did you see the bear going down the road?
No, and I was happy not to have seen it.

wow. a crashing might never be what we Think it is! good move on your part!
Thanks. 🙂
yes that was a good move –
I often cross the road here, if I see a dog running loose or see a lot of barking at a fence. Dogs are not supposed to roam about on their own…in this city. Yes, I know a dog isn’t a bear, but some dogs are vicious!
The bear was trying to run from me, I think, so it wasn’t dangerous. Dogs are another matter, the dangerous ones aren’t afraid of people.
You did the right thing. You have good instincts!
I was tickled it wasn’t elk. 🙂
Oh my, I certainly wouldn’t want to see a bear!
I wouldn’t mind seeing one running away from me, but I wouldn’t go looking in the bushes for one!
Somewhere there’s a picture of my father holding 2 y/o me beside a (small) black bear in the Jemez. It appears the bear was paying us no mind; but in retrospect, I’m concerned ‘momma’ may have been nearby and my parents a little foolish.
Wow! I agree.
Oh ya…I’d be elated to know I didn’t get the opportunity to be face to face with a bear. I was as a kid…a mama bear with cubs. Long story, but let’s just say I went thru the open car window in the nick of time!!!
That’s a dangerous situation!
Wow!!!
Yes. 😀
That was one very wise decision:)
I was happy with it. 😀
I never had to worry about bears…and I am glad I didn’t. And glad you avoided it because you never know. Specially if there happens to be a cub involved…
Or just a scared bear trying to run away.
If I heard a crashing I would have done exactly what you did and gone the other direction.
It’s not wise to chase a scared bear. It might feel trapped and defend itself.
good choice to miss seeing what was crashing, even elk can be dangerous. or so the Colorado blogger says. i don’t ever want to see a bear except from inside of building or car..
I agree!
If I saw a bear walking down the road, I would know I was hallucinating and wonder what Jenny had put in the coffee.
😀
