Always nice to get something checked off the to-do list!
We’ve been trying for a long time but the fellow was busy, then there was a delay in getting parts. It is nice to have it done. ๐
So, what exactly does lightning protection mean?
It means putting good conductors on the outside of buildings so lightning will go on the outside instead of wrecking the building. https://stormhighway.com/protection.php
Thanks. I’ve hear of grounding, but didn’t realize there were cables & rods involved.
I’ve never heard of it either – but at least it’s another off Andy’s To Do List…
btw, when I had to have my smoke alarms repaired the dude said there were new ones available that could send a message to your mobile phone if they were activated whilst out of your house…. Of course a private rental wouldn’t garner one and he laughed…but that’s something Andy might want to add to his To Do List unless of course that’s taken care of
It’s a good idea, but it wouldn’t work for us because our cell phone reception is so bad.
So what is lighting protection? Is it motion sensor lights?
No, it’s designed to have lightning go outside of buildings instead of destroying things. Lightning is a danger up there. Before we had a lot of trees (dead, but still) around the shed and greenhouse so they would be more apt to be hit than the buildings. (One tree was indeed hit.) But we had the trees removed in order to clear a defensible space for wildfires.
Well thatโs cool!
Yeh!
I canโt go to Flickr though
I used to have an account there and I probably still do but I donโt know what old email it was under or what the password was and I just donโt have the mental energy to tackle it.
Maybe later!
xo
Have you tried the link? It’s fine if you don’t want to, but you shouldn’t have to log on. Please let me know if that’s not true.
Thumbs up to that!

I saw the Rest of The Story on flicker and wow, do you have a lot of rocks to dig through for those holes. excellent story in photos. now you have the new, better and best of lighting rods instead of the Rooster weather vanes/slash rods. I see many houses here with Rods sticking up. we live in the lightning captial of USA, and our part of FL is the capital of lightning for the state. i did NOT know about this type of lighting protection. I love your mountain top and can see why you want this, you are much closer to the strikes way up there
The trouble is the dirt and rocks aren’t really a good ground, but there’s nothing we can do about that. I had heard about Florida and lightning. That sucks. ๐
What great technology! I’m going to see if that’s not available here. Several trees on the lot next door have been struck, and I was sure during last week’s storm that one of ours would fall prey.
Back home, I remember the government stuck what looked like a 3′ piece of rebar in the ground, right close to our quad.
It’s scary to see trees that have been struck so close to us, but better that than hitting our houses. ๐
Well I see some of the others had the same question I did so I won’t ask again. Very interesting.

Are these what people sometimes refer to as lightning rods? Whatever they are, it’s a great idea!
Yes, those pointed things on top of the shed and greenhouse are lightning rods. Benjamin Franklin invented them.
Good for you. We were babysitting and had a rare lightening storm which is the worst they have had in Orange, CA. Thankfully James didn’t wake up because of his sound machine.
That’s great that he didn’t wake up. Thunder can be scary.
