Opportunities

To improve the golden moment of opportunity, and catch the good that is within our reach, is the great art of life.
—Samuel Johnson

Do you use the word opportunity much? Johnson’s quote made me aware that I don’t… unless something threatens to kick me out of my comfort zone. Then I ask,

What’s the opportunity here?

I drew this cartoon years ago to laugh at that reaction:

But I’m sticking to it. I spent over an hour and a half with Apple tech support this morning and the problem isn’t completely resolved. I managed to practice being patient, relaxed, alert, and friendly to the support person… I figure that’s more important in the long run than this particular problem. Learning to steer our ship takes a lot of practice. I don’t know about you, but my life gives me plenty of opportunities to do just that.

Your opportunity is to be the first ever to learn lip sinking?

  2. Ann Thompson says:

Now that I think of it, I don’t think I ever use the word opportunity. I suppose this post gives me the opportunity to change that.

  3. MadSnapper says:

Not only do I not use the word, I don’t think I even think the word. I like the cartoon and Annies lip sinking. ha ha… I do know I would never think of being on the phone with a support person as an opportunity. Phone Support makes me really crazy. I try to use CHAT as much as I can. good luck with the iphone

  4. Rose says:

I do use the word opportunity sometimes at least. And a lot of times I wonder what I am supposed to.learn in certain situations!

  5. Cute cartoon! I don’t remember hearing ‘opportunity’ spoken (often and emphasized) since leaving the Corporate World. I’m more likely to say ‘chances.’

  6. I don’t use opportunity in “what is the opportunity here for me” rather I think in terms of “opportunities are everywhere” – but on saying and writing that I rarely follow up on an opportunity as so many times people have said “you can’t do that…” and in the main they are right. I didn’t stand on the ledge, especially when I was setting out on sole business journeys…I think I missed the boat, then…but that was then. Now is now…

The time when I did step outside their thought thinking was when I was away a month, drifting. And various people contacted me “surely you’ve run out of money and will need to come home” – I actually didn’t, I set a budget of sorts…and I was afraid I would run out of money and was wary of. The next time I went away for 3 weeks in my own island I booked single rooms as I knew I could afford that…
