As I’ve mentioned, one thing Andy tried was soaking the roots of a mullein for about 15 minutes before trying to pull it up.
It worked fine if the tap root went straight down, but it took more than that for a mullein like this one:
We’re guessing the tap root had to go around a rock so it was no longer straight. That means pulling doesn’t work, it has to be dug up.

What does he do with the stuff he pulls up?
He puts it on the ground to dry up and eventually disintegrate.
Yikes, they have huge fat roots!!
That’s why he wants to pull them up, so they don’t regenerate. I think it might be easier to cut the difficult ones off at the base, then chop then off again if they come back.
Wow, that thing is pretty big.
Yes. 🙂
they are HUGE! never seen a weed that big, i wonder if they flower if left there long enough
See today’s (July 15) post. 🙂
I, too, can’t image any weed that big! And we thought the kudzu was bad!
I think kudzu are worse because they spread so easily and fast. The mullein need full sun and can easily be shaded by other plants. The kudzu is the vine that ate the South. https://www.nature.org/en-us/about-us/where-we-work/united-states/indiana/stories-in-indiana/kudzu-invasive-species/
Interesting! At least you figured it out.
They’re impressive plants, impressive and fascinating.
That looks huge! What a bunch of time needed to tackle this tough job!
Andy did a great job. 🙂
the electronics and scientific Andy-man will find the way…
Yes, he has other options to try. 🙂
Wowzers !!! That is one humongous weed!!!
It is impressive!
