Does Anyone Else Love Richard Scarry Books?

Richard Scarry is one of the world’s best-loved children’s authors EVER! Generations of children all over the world have grown up spending hours poring over his books filled with all the colorful details of their daily lives. No other illustrator has shown such a lively interest in the words and concepts of early childhood. For himself, whenever he was asked how old he was, Scarry would always put up one hand and laugh, saying, “five!”

In his extraordinary career, Richard Scarry illustrated over 150 books, many of which have never been out of print. His books have sold over 100 million copies around the world, and are currently published in over twenty languages.

I loved reading some of his books with Kaitlin when she was little, so I thought of him when I was looking for some easy Spanish books to read. Sure enough, there were three in Spanish, so I bought them. I’m a little kid at heart too.

I don’t remember ever seeing books by this author, looked at a few just now on amazon at a few of them and not familiar. born in 1944 mother had no acess to books until I was about 8, and to old for these books. I loved story books, and fairy tales. I read about him and he has sold millions of books, born in 1919.

Why have I never heard of Richard Scarry?! The only books I recall from my early years were Bible Stories for Children or Grimm’s Fairy Tales.

That’s a clever way in which to practice what you’re learning.

His Best Word Book Ever was first published in 1963. I discovered him in the early 1970s when Kaitlin was little.

What a great idea to help with your Spanish! We read them to our son when he was little.

  4. Ann Thompson says:

I don’t recall ever reading any of his books or even if I ever read them to my kids.

I love this idea as a way to continue learning a language. My mother once commented that I enjoyed reading to our daughter more than she enjoyed listening.

There are a few in the boxes in storage in the basement – our kids and the granndkids all enjoyed them too. Colorful and interesting and eye-catching.

  7. I’ve never heard of him either but now it appears Libby has some as e-books and I’m going to have a read…but he sounds like “fun”.

ok, I’ve just borrowed “Richard Scarry’s Lowly Worm meets with the Early Bird” – and I can see it’s nearly all graphics 🙂

I hadn’t heard of that one so I looked it up. It has fewer words than the ones we had. In ours the characters were smaller and there was a lot more going on.
