Andy looked happy the other morning as he left. The lows have been getting down into the 20s up on the land so he thought maybe that would give him a rest from having to fight the mulleins in the defensible space.
No such luck. As you can see from the picture they are still thriving.
Common mullein is a tough plant that can withstand extremes at either end of the temperature spectrum. It is hardy down to -25 degrees F and will thrive throughout a hot summer if watered occasionally in the absence of rain. It is not finicky about humidity levels.

I’m sure if mulleins could think and feel they would be overjoyed that Andy has kept the defensible space so clear of their competitors.

LOL that the Ms Mullein was cheering on Andy as he cleared the other pesky plants, giving her and her family more room to grow – big, strong and tall!
🙂
Well, reading that description, it is quite clear that I am NOT part of the mullein family….LOL That is one hardy plant being able to stand such a wide temperature range.
I’m with you!
who knew? wow on that wide temp tolerance. I am with ann, i have a very narrow temp tolerance
Me too!
I don’t think I’d ever heard of the mullein before ‘meeting’ you.
Not only is it pretty, but according to Dr. Google beneficial for one’s health. Who knew?
I know. We still want to keep them down to a dull roar.
We have them around here. They really are true survivors, and now they have no competitors there! I believe the Native Americans used them for all kinds of medicine.
Yes, they did.
We’re sure not ready for colder temps here, brrrrr.
How did it get to be the middle of October already?
We have mullein here in Virginia. And when it was blooming someone posted on facebook that when it’s dried, and carried in a small pouch, it’s supposed to have the power to give you courage, protection, health, and even to find love. People even thought (still think?) that if you placed a small amount of it under your pillow, it’ll stop nightmares. Maybe I should try it …. ?
It’s worth a try! 🙂
