Jumbo, the Dutch supermarket chain, introduced
slow checkouts when it discovered some people
enjoy chatting while paying for their goods.
The added personal touch is helping many
people, especially the elderly, deal with
loneliness. The move has proven so successful
that Jumbo has installed the slow checkouts in
200 stores.

How sweet is that?
that is certainly sweet
Yes. 🙂
I wonder if i could get Walmart to install one of these, i love it and would use it.. and do chat with the girls who watch the self check out if they are not busy.
The trouble is the people at the stores are so busy.
Oh, I wish this might catch on!
There’s so much ‘impersonal-ness’ (?) these days.
Our store has trouble hiring people, so it’s not apt to happen here. Sigh.
I will always pick a human cashier over a self-check. Having a particularly interesting and up beat cashier would be worth the extra wait…
I usually do the self-serve The line for a human here is usually long and they’re too busy to talk.
That’s darn cool. Lots of our checkouts are slow here but not by design!
I know!
I read this and my first thought was that Sandra would love this. I don’t think I would go to the slow checkout though. I’m not much of a chatter. Then again, I don’t mind talking to a cashier that’s extra friendly.
I thought of Sandra too. 🙂
Amazing! Now I wonder who thought of this? And I wonder how it has affected their numbers. The Mad One would be in heaven!
They seem to think it’s worth it, thank goodness.
