My Veteran

As luck would have it, Andy had to go shopping yesterday. Because he was a veteran (Korean War) he got 10% off his total bill. That was a nice surprise.

When Andy was a sophomore in college his father told him he was bound to be drafted, but if Andy volunteered for the draft he could choose when to go . Andy should go between his sophomore and junior years…that would mess up his life the least. So Andy did, and he served for two years. Fortunately he didn’t have to fight or even go overseas, but it was still the worst two years of his life. And as it turned out, his father had been wrong. The war ended. If Andy had stayed in college he wouldn’t have had to do it.

My first husband, father of my 2 sons, was in Korea and had just come home from there when we met and married. he said it was awful. my brother is Vietnam vet, 2 uncles WWII vets, daddy and bob were turned down. Bob was drafted, but had a 2 year old and one on the way and they did not take him
I am glad Andy did not have to go overseas.. he looks wonderful, this is a great photo

I am glad Andy did not have to fight…

  3. None of the veterans here on campus had to fight either…and there are a lot of them. They all enlisted as college students and went in as officers.

Andy was given that choice, but it would have meant staying in the army an extra six months so he said no. He had already been playing with electronics and did well on that test so they put him in the signal core and sent him to electronics classes and then to do field work.

  4. I’m sorry to hear how that turned out. Thankfully he didn’t have to fight.

I had an uncle who served in the Korean war. My dad served in WWII but the war ended at the same time his training did so he never saw active duty.
Nice that he got a discount for his service.

…in WWII my father was an involuntary volunteer.

An interesting story! I love seeing him, too!!

My Dave volunteered because he was thought he was about to get drafted into the Viet Nam war and he said he’d rather fly over it than walk through it. Then he went back to college on the GI bill. I’m glad he wasn’t a ground pounder during that war.

  10. Well, that was a tough call but I’m sure it seemed logical at the time.
