Art as Meditation

When you sit down to draw something, time stops its crazy dance. You will feel your mind focus and quiet. A 10-minute drawing can leave you composed and refreshed. It’s not about the lines on the page, it’s about the way your eyes, brain, and hand come into alignment, about how you are mooring yourself to the here and now. At first, your monkey mind will chatter and distract you, but soon you will find you can snap right into this state of calm and focus. I have never been able to empty my mind through traditional meditation, but a simple drawing before breakfast starts my day off in a connected, grounded way.

Sewing sometimes does the same thing…just focused on it and forget everything else. And going fishing, if I had a place close by is wonderful for just living in the moment.

  3. Nice drawing.

    God bless.

  4. Christine says:

Plus you are good at art!

  5. Myra Guca says:

    That’s an awesome sketch!
(I’m giggling and nodding at the term ‘monkey mind’!)

Humming works too, not sure where I read that but I can confirm that I can’t think/worry when I’m humming.

I judge myself so much when I’m drawing, never good enough, but maybe I’ll try.

  7. Nice drawing. I also judge myself too much. I am not an artist and can’t seem to not care.

This quote is really interesting to me! The dog drawing is excellent, I could not come even close to it.

I do not have artistic talent, so I was surprised it turned out so well. Now back to “bad” drawings and learning new things.

you have the gift of drawing, and I agree 100%. I spent the evenings drawing on Ipad until the battery was dwindling, then chose pen/pencils/paper. the old time way. it surely was a way of calming my brain, each night for 7 nights. love your new pup

That’s one reason I’m doing it…to have something to do when the electricity is out. I love the colors and possibilities of Procreate, but it’s nice to have a backup.

  11. Ann Thompson says:

That is so true. Any time I immerse myself into something creative whether it’s drawing or crafting I focus so much on what I’m doing and enjoying that the rest of the world is shut out.

  12. That is wonderful. Playing musical instruments helps clear my mind.

  13. have just got some of his e-books out to read and look

when I’m totally not well, I have to “rest” but yesterday after I got my framed work back, I sorted out the “color on no color” art work. Will post that picture soon – still not sure if I like but some here do “like”
