Country Music, Happy Memories

This Pearls Before Swine comic talks about country music.

Pig: I heard the greatest country music song at a bar last night, but I can’t remember the title.

Rat: Tell me what it’s about and I’ll Google it.

Pig: It’s about his guy with a pickup truck and a cheating spouse.

Rat: Oh, good. You’ve narrowed it down to nine million songs.

Pig: Oh, and somebody drowns their sorrows.

Rat: Somehow that didn’t help.

I usually don’t listen to country music, but I laughed at the comic. Lately these words have been going through my head,

You picked a fine time to leave me Lucille
With four hungry children
And a crop in the field

It’s from the song Lucille, and they played it once down in the assisted living place because one of the women was named Lucille. It’s a happy memory from when I was buzzing around in my wheel chair after I broke my hip.

Do you have any happy memories from unusual situations?

  1. Ann Thompson says:

This reminds me of my husband. He hated country music. I tend to have a wide variety of music that I listen to based on my mood, and country is one of them. He said one day that all country music was the same, girl leaves and he’s heartbroken. I surprised him one day when I played a CD I had and proved him wrong. I can’t recall who the artist was or what the song was but it wasn’t about losing a girl and being heartbroken

  2. MadSnapper says:

I love some of all genres, no genre that I love all the songs. I do love country and like those better than most. the cartoon is hilarious and TRUE..
I love Jelly Rolls song, Lord, I need a favor, and Somebody save me. neither are about what the cartoon says… thanks for the smile today

  3. tomthebackroadstraveller says:

…I enjoyed the country music of the past. Today’s country ain’t my thing.

  4. Christine says:

Hope Lucille doesn’t get stuck in my head today!

  5. Shug says:

This is a cute joke. like Christine I hope I don’t end up singing this song all day..I think I’ve already played in my head a few times..LOL. And like Madsnapper, I like many of the Jelly Roll songs. Also….Cody Johnson has several Christian country songs that I listen too. One is “By your Grace.”
And…”Where I find God” by Larry Fleet.

  6. Myra Guca says:

Like Tom, I prefer the old, “real” Country music.
Unusual situation? I’ve not thought about this for years, but the first thing to pop in my head was the time a priest led those of us in the lifeboat/tender back to ship in singing, “Nearer my God to Thee.”
Some of the older passengers’ expressions reflected obvious disapproval, but it was our joy and laughter I remember most.

  7. Rose says:

That is funny….I like some country…I just don’t want to listen to it all the time. I cannot remember a happy memory in an unusual situation, but I know there have been some.

  8. Ginny Hartzler says:

I don’t know if that is a really happy memory or if you were being facetious! But this is a really good joke! For me, certain songs always bring back memories of what was happening to me during the time they were popular.

  9. I am sure I have memories like that but I can’t think of one now. I like Waylon and a few others I can’t think of but overall, not a country fan. I’m a child of the 60s!

  10. Yes, Lucille will be with me the rest of the day!

  11. That is interesting about the Lucille song and you bussing around in the wheel chair. I’m not into country music at all.

  12. Bruce Taylor says:

Probably many but I can’t think of a particular one right now.

  13. Linda Sand says:

I recently read a good one. Someone said that with self driving vehicles now it is only a matter of time before someone writes a country song about a guy’s truck leaving him.

I’ve had Lucille in my head lately but I have no idea why.

  14. A great song by Kenny Rogers.

    God bless.
