Do You Remember Those Northern Lights ?

Apparently the solar storms that produced them played havoc with a lot of modern farmers.

The issue is that modern tractors are highly dependent on GPS, which is provided by sensitive satellites in our planet’s orbit. One extreme solar storm in May, they say, threw off equipment when planting season was already in full swing.

“Our tractors acted like they were demon possessed.”
—-SOLAR STORMS ARE DRIVING FARMERS “CRAZY”.

What are they going to do about it? Well, more solar storms are predicted for another year or two, so engineers are looking at ways that artificial intelligence can reduce the reliance on GPS navigation.

Wow! Things keep changing.

…beautiful, I always sleep through them.

Beautiful photo…..I feel for these farmers. This is what my husbands family does for a living….we farm! any disturbance in the day to day operations of a large farm can be costly.

Farming is a hard business,. Our plumber’s father grew apples. He told his son no matter what he did, don’t become a farmer.

I think they should take the bps off of tractors and learn to use them without satellites and that applies to phones and all things that use it. one of the worst things to happen to our world…

  4. Rose says:

I could not have imagined this as a child…I wonder if I am the only one.

  5. Christine says:

Have never been lucky enough to see them.

That’s crazy. All the modern technology that is supposed to make life easier sure can be a real headache sometimes. There’s a lot to be said for the good old fashioned way of doing things.

  7. Myra Guca says:

This sounds more and more like a sci-fi flick! I agree, mute the GPS.

  8. Pixie says:

It’s kinda funny really. Perhaps old fashioned plowing will come back into vogue.
I don’t know what farms are like in the US, but I have never met a farmer here whose only job was farming. They always have a full time job off the farm too.

  9. Hmmm, bet the old time farmers will be smiling!

  10. I didn’t know that about the tractors. There are things we never had in the past that I can’t imagine not having now…like the internet and cell phones. Life is always changing. 🙂

I had no idea! It’s like a science fiction movie!

  12. Joared says:

Beautiful sight I’ve seen only in photos like this. I had no idea tractors had been so affected.

  13. Wow, that is extremely interesting. Hope they can figure something out.
