I planted my second celery stump September 7, 2025 and it had already started growing by the next day:

Here’s a picture of it taken September 12, 2025. It’s the one on the left.
I tried planting it as soon as it started putting out a little root, but I knew it wouldn’t survive because celery like a lot of sunshine, and our apartment doesn’t have it. I was surprised it looked perky as long as it did. It looked fine went I went to bed September 29, but it had wilted by the time I got up the next morning.

I gently tugged on the stalks and they came out.

Sigh. I won’t try celery stumps again. I’ll stick with my shade-loving pothos for my window sill. They love it there.

It was fun to try.
Pothos is my favorite of all houseplants, you might remember Philomena, the pothos that lived in the kitchen from 1990 to March 23 of this year, it died the week before Bob stopped walking. and I have never replaced it.. I have lots of sunshine but no celery..
I have some small pothos, all descended from a cutting a friend gave me back around 1990. I try to keep them small which means occasional pruning and repotting.
poor celery. Well it did get off to a good start at least. I’ve got a post scheduled soon with an update on my celery.

Pothos have been known to survive my care and places I’ve lived with little light. That celery did well for a little while, though.

I looked up growing celery from scraps and found contradictory advice so I think I’ll continue getting mine in the store.
I wasn’t trying for more celery. I just wanted to know what would happen. 🙂

I see where Amazon has some pretty attractive grow lights……
Years ago we had petunias and African violets under grow lights, but now I’ll stick to plants that like my living room just as it is. 🙂

Nice try, and fun for sure. Maybe it would work in the greenhouse with all those tomatoes. We don’t have a good spot for plants with sun inside either. Lots of big windows but not the right table location to put them on.
