Rabbits and Elk

One consequence of all the rain and greenery is the rabbits and elk are thriving. We see a lot of rabbits on the roads. When we were taking our walk one evening they mostly scurried off as soon as they saw us, but this one waited under a bush until we got a lot closer.

And twice when we drove back at dusk we saw a big herd of elk grazing on both sides of the highway. Once we just slowed down, but the other time some were crossing and we had to stop while a baby decided which side of the road he wanted to be on.

On the Fourth of July we drove down late because we had watched the fireworks in Santa Fe from our porch. (They were line-of-sight, but 40 miles away, so they weren’t very big!) That night we came within about a foot of colliding with a thousand-pound bull elk. Andy thinks the elk had seen us coming and tried to get out of the way, but the road curved. Fortunately they were both able to swerve in time. Otherwise it would not have been pretty for any of us.

Clear indication that rejuvenation is taking place and that the worst is over. Things can only improve from now on. All the best.

Thanks for the encouraging words, but there are no guarantees. Culverts always need maintenance, and for some reason Andy isn’t getting any younger. We’ll just have to see how it all works out.

“Fortunately they were both able to swerve in time.” –Or then you could have been eating Elk Chops.

  3. Glad you were able to avoid an accident–We both know sometimes it can’t be… But we are seeing a lot of bunnies this year too and had 3 sitting together last evening, I’m wondering how many that’ll turn into? 😉

I hope you’ve enjoyed your weekend, take care!

Lovely to see that not only the greenery is returning but also the wild livestock – who need more than shelter to procreate and so on.

I am using my new to me laptop which is smaller, therefore more portable and has Win7Pro instead of old XP. It’s not as clunky but I am still learning where things are on the gadget…
