Monitoring Our Information Diet

Because these days it’s more important than ever to monitor your information diet so as not to damage delicate emotional tissues. It’s not that you don’t want to stay informed but sometimes a glancing blow of news is good enough. Get the gist, enough to fill in the right bubbles on the ballot, and move on with your life.

“A glancing blow of news.” Sounds like a great strategy to me!

These days that description is accurate, unfortunately!

There’s so much news and information out there nowadays that I couldn’t possibly read more than a fraction of it. Most news reports could in theory give you all the important points in a few paragraphs. When they ramble on for columns and columns I usually read the first few paragraphs and then move on. I also ignore “long reads” unless the subject is one I’m really interested in. And yes, a glancing blow of news is quite enough if it’s something gruesome or shocking.

The pieces I read often give quite a bit of information in the first paragraph or two. And often the topic is mentioned in a lot of other newspapers, so it’s easy enough to keep track of what they think is important. Articles about long-term trends are harder to find.

  3. yep, I’m fond of “glancing the news/similar” – even articles of interest, if they waffle on too long OR I’m hard pressed for time, it gets a glance. I will ready opening paragraphs and sometimes stroll to end for maybe a summary.
