The Well House

I finally put some of my pictures from the family visit on Flickr, here and here.

Some of the ones I like best are of Andy and Kaitlin at the well house, and the pups trying to figure out what they were doing down there.

We would surely be very curious about what is down that well house. In fact, Timber might even try to jump in:)

Not a good idea, unless you can climb down a ladder. it’s an 8 foot drop. Even Tempi didn’t try it — attic stairs yes, ladders, no. 🙂

  2. Are well houses like that common where you’re at? I’ve never seen one around here.

    • Jean says:

No, they’re usually above ground but Andy had it buried and added about three feet of insulation on the top so things wouldn’t freeze without added heat in winter. So far the idea has worked fine.

  3. Well if I was in their “paws” I too would want to know what “they were doing down there too?”

Would you explain how the “well house” collects water? Is there an underground spring or similar?

    • Jean says:

The well driller had to go down about 500 feet to find a reliable source of water. The water flows in from the permeable rock and accumulates in the well. The rate at which the water flows in, the recharge rate, is about a gallon a minute, our pump can pump 5 gallons per minute, so once the accumulated water in the well is gone, after about an hour or even less if there’s a drought, Andy stops pumping until it fills up again.

The pumped water goes into our 10,000-gallon storage tank. The water he uses for his trees and the house comes from the tank.

    • Jean says:

Oh, yes, why the well house? It has a settling tank and filters to clean the water before it goes up to the storage tank.

    • Jean says:

      Thank you for asking!

That made me laugh to see the dogs appear after their people were down in the well house. I bet they were wondering how they could get down that ladder.

I guess the dogs are wondering if it’s a secret food store.
