There May Be Hope Yet

Oh, not for the U.S. or the state of the world…I’m still focusing on Let’s Face the Music and Dance for that…but for our Motor Vehicle Department.

My license was due to expire in about three weeks, and I didn’t look forward to the long wait. But then I remembered COVID has changed the idea of us waiting in a crowded room, so I went online to see what the new system is. It turns out they have a special email address for people 79 or older…those of us who have to renew once a year so they can check our vision. So I wrote and asked what I should do and they said,

Customers who are 79 or over may now have the option of renewing online instead of visiting an office, please see the attached document regarding online renewal. If you passed the eye test in the office at your last renewal you should not need a Vision Report from your eye doctor.

And apparently if I hadn’t been tested last year I could send in a vision report from my eye doctor and still renew online. Wow! That’s a big improvement. My new license is on its way, and hopefully the days of waiting in long MVD lines are over. Fingers crossed!

That’s wonderful. I hope Covid is gone by the time I have to renew, but that is a very nice option.

Goodness, common sense prevails. Fancy that…

I recently had to renew mine. I first had to go and make an appt.
then I showed up at my appointed time (two weeks until an opening) and had to show my ID and registration. no charge. free to senior citizens. they took my picture and said my new license would be mailed to me. they were limiting the number of people in the agency. by appt only!

I expected to have to make an appointment, but this was so much easier. Did you have to wait even though you had an appointment? Kaitlin and Torben did when they moved to MA from IL. They still had to wait out in the cold.

What a stroke of fortune! Being as Tom turns 79 in February, I’m going to investigate what, if anything, Alabama might offer. Cross figners? We travel to UAB tomorrow to meet with an eye specialist.

Wonderful! It’s good to know they are concerned about us seniors.

  6. That’s good news. Here, those of in our 70s don’t have to renew every year, not sure if we do in our 80s but it makes sense to do it.

Sounds like a policy that could work.

  8. well maybe there are some pluses to this time period – especially when it comes to “going and waiting” v “doing it online easily”

some online things here have been waived here as well, including one of my allowances that is “online anyway” but because of the status of those who have lost jobs etc – many of the regular things on hold. I suspect that I could still apply for something if it was necessary but the staff deployed (so to speak) to help in other areas…

Yay for online making our lives easier. We have always been able to renew online! But then the last time I renewed I got an email stating and a note in the mail stating that I could not renew online because I had to update my paperwork because I had never given them my birth certificate my marriage certificate my divorce certificate and a bunch of other stuff so I had to go in and it turned out I had to make two trips because it didn’t have the right thing. Turned into a nightmare so I’m thankful yours was an easy fix

    • Jean says:

I’m guessing that nightmare was when they switched to Real ID. Ours was a mess too, and the lines were especially long then.

It’s always nice to have an easy option like that. I renew mine online but still have to go in for a new picture.

Was being able to read that part of the eye test?

  12. Rose Swalls says:

That is wonderful that you could go that route!
