Decisions

Mostly our town has had a lower COVID case rate than the rest of New Mexico, but suddenly it has shot up. I’m double masking when I go to the store, and we had to decide whether to keep Andy’s dentist appointment for tomorrow and my eye exam for Thursday. We decided since Andy’s appointment was just for a cleaning he should cancel that and make a new appointment after things settle down. I’m keeping my eye appointment because tomorrow was the first day they had when I tried to schedule my annual exam for last September. They seem to be careful about COVID and I’ll double mask.

I’ve been following the New Mexico site for information about our county, but they’ve been behind the past few days. So I went searching and found this New York Times site: Track Coronavirus Cases in Places Important to You. Good for the internet and the New York Times!

I follow the NYT site daily. Yours looks scary. Be careful and stay safe.

    That’s quite a spike there.

Florida is rampant with the virus and growing by leaps and bounds, it was our headlines today. will check out the link. our state is wide open to everything and the tourists are flocking here to hide from the snow/ice. we are staying home and hoping for the best. we do our doc appts though, but i think your choice was the right one. cancel his and keep yours. we don’t need to mess around with our eyes for sure

    I can’t access the NY Times because I don’t have a subscription.
but our local news is pretty good at keeping us informed of where we are in the covid situation. and yet most people STILL aren’t wearing a mask!
I just don’t understand. is it the Science or the Politics they don’t trust?
Why would anyone take a chance on making their own grandparents sick?

Human nature in action. People believe what they want to believe. Some people booed Trump when he suggested they get vaccinated voluntarily.

I, too, have begun double-masking. Even our home healthcare nurse arrived yesterday wearing one of those N95 masks (v. her usual paper mask).
From what I’ve read, if I were to contract Covid it’s unlikely I’d actually die — vs. Tom whose system’s all sorts of compromised.
Taking these precautions and postponing appointments is a small price to pay, I do believe.

I wonder how different the rate of mask wearing would be if the mask provided protection to the wearer more than to the people around them? Unfortunately, the physics of the interaction isn’t changed by the good intentions of the mask wearer. Like many, I have gone back to picking up groceries, going through drive-throughs when we just must eat someone else’s cooking, and double masking when I go to medical appointments.

One nice thing about eye appointments (I had one on the 10th) is that we can at least keep our own masks on – and most places have masked staff. Good luck!

  7. I pray this comes to an end soon. Double masking is a great idea. I still believe in masks and sanitizing.

I’m glad masks are required in our grocery store. We also try to go when it’s not too crowded. Every little bit helps until it all settles down.

  8. Hootin' Anni says:

I continue to wear masks…never stopped (unless dining). But, I can’t help but think if you’ve been fully vaxxed and get the omicron variant, you may be helping yourself by building immunity. Maybe? Just an uneducated guess.

    • Jean says:

We’ve had all three shots, but the booster was in early September so its effects have probably mostly worn off. I’m 82 and Andy’s almost 87, so we’re supposed to be extra vulnerable.

  9. The OP Pack says:

The numbers are very high here too. Hubby cancelled a dental cleaning for the same reason. One of the daughter’s entire family had the virus, but all very mild cases thankfully. Best to make the decisions that keep us the safest without compromising needed appontments.

  10. little ole New Zealand with infections in the below daily 50s is having to adapt to aspects that seem draconian – and the messages from the “modellers, public health and current gov’t” stance is all over the place. I keep hearing from different factions that “is what is happening worldwide” and “therefore, blah, blah, blah”
for now, I’ll be staying home…until I have a sense that things are wherever…
