They Encouraged Us to Leave

Even thought the Burg was spectacular, they encouraged us to travel. To enrich our experience they took us on two field trips, one at the beginning of each quarter. The one in January was to Rome to see St Peter’s, the Forum, Colosseum, etc., with visits to Florence and Venice on the way back. It still blows me away how young we were.

The second field trip wasn’t as pretty, but it was an experience we could never repeat…it was to see the May Day parade in East Berlin. Again, this was in 1960 and the Berlin Wall was built in 1961.

A couple of the guys in our group had an adventure of a lifetime. They happened to walk down a street where the parade was being organized. Someone handed them each a flag and ordered them to start marching. They did so gladly, and after the parade was over no one asked for the flags back so they got to keep them as souvenirs.

My own adventure was different. How did I manage to be at a birthday party at this German family’s home the first night I was in Berlin?

I’ll tell you that story next time.

WOW! your memories are getting better and better as we go in your down memory lane trip with you. I love seeing the young YOU and your friends and what an adventure your life has been. of course since you KNOW me well, you will understand why I make this comment. I LOVE the pig and the cow dancing. even more than your friends marching with a flag. cant wait for the reason you were in that home.

Your May Day experience in Berlin has given me goosebumps! Right there, on the cusp of history! I, too, look forward to (as Paul Harvey used to say) the REST of the story.

Memorable photos. I realized, at visiting here tonight, that I have been absent for a week or so. I had to read several posts to find out what was happening. I’ll try not to miss so much in the future.

  9. what wonderful memories along with photos

I went through Checkpoint Charlie and have a stamp in my passport to prove it – and since then the wall has been taken down…
