Dick Van Dyke was driving on a slick road last week in Malibu, California, when he crashed into a block wall, authorities said Wednesday.

Dick is 97 years old. He was injured but was treated at the spot and didn’t have to go to a hospital. Another (minor) victim of the severe weather California has been having.
I’m sorry it happened, and I’m glad it wasn’t worse. As for us, it gives us hope that maybe Andy can keep driving up to the land for another nine years. How great would that be? (Fingers crossed, but we’re not counting on it. 😉 )

here a regulation/rule of re-tests can find the older person off the road when they least expect it…or restricted to a small ‘hood area if they are safe to drive to the local grocery store. Some people of course, know their limitations and take the option of not driving much.
I drive to the grocery store but don’t drive out of town unless it’s an emergency.
I don’t think it has anything to do with driving ability…reflex, mindset, and awareness. I know some teens who are not capable of driving!!
Our reflexes do slow down with age, but I’m guessing the slick roads were the main problem. Tiger Woods did a lot more damage to himself a couple of years ago even though his reflexes are probably a lot better than most people’s.
Well, it does sound like it was the weather and not his age. That sure is a good thing!
Yes. I’m glad he wasn’t seriously hurt.
Glad he’s okay! He’s great to listen to. I wish Betty White was still with us too!
Betty was amazing. I have two of her audio books. 🙂
Dick Van Dyke is a marvel. But, as Judy said when I told her about his accident, he may have to give up his drivers’ license as the Duke of Edinburgh did after he had an accident at about the same age. However, I said they may have to pry it out of his hands! 🙂
I read that there was some talk of giving him a driving test. That would make more sense than taking his license away without checking.
I think Andy and Bob will be driving for years more, it has a lot to do with the belief they can drive and their health. I have always like Van Dyke, glad he is ok. when our friend died at age 96 he was still driving. death due to ill health not driving.
There are never any guarantees, but fingers crossed. I’m happy that your friend could still drive.
PS, my dad drove until dementia forced him to stop, he was 93 when he died. we had to take his license and keys when we found out he was driving to church, and stopping in the parking lot and asking anyone he could find to park his car, and after church asking them to back it out for him. also he took out the corner post to his carport twice. dementia is another ball game
Dementia is heartbreaking.
I’d not heard about this incident. I hope the authorities will temper any decision regarding his license with common sense. They need to remember, everyone is different.
We’ve not met, but I wouldn’t be betting against Andy!
We’ll have to see. Fingers crossed!
I’d heard about the accident, but didn’t know if Dick Van Dyke was driving. Having come so, so close to hitting a deer this evening, I’m hoping that *if* I’m still driving at 97, I’ll still be quick enough to stop to avoid hurting Bambi!
Andy drives a lot more slowly that he used to, especially because of the deer and elk.
I’ve always liked Dick Van Dyke. So glad he wasn’t seriously hurt. I’m betting this accident had more to do with the weather than his ability.
I think the same thing. I had a minor version of that kind of accident years ago. No big harm done, but it was scary.
