How Cool It Is…

to be over 70. Why? Because in Monday’s mail I received a summons for two months of jury duty for the Northern Division of the U. S. District Court of New Mexico. That would mostly mean trips to Albuquerque, 100 miles away. (Very occasionally the trials would be in Santa Fe, only a 35-minute drive.).

I had to do it over 40 years ago. Then someone had personally come to my door and had me sign that I had received the summons. This time I only had to go online and answer a number of questions, including that I was over 70 and chose to opt out.

This time was a lot easier.

That is a big advantage to being over 70. Wow on how far you would have to travel and this would last for 2 months? Here you get a summons and you appear one day. If you get picked for a jury then you have to appear however long it takes for the trial. The drive is only about 30-40 miles.

  2. That’s a long distance.

    God bless.

I did the opt out the last time I got one, I think I was 75 then. I went online and then received an emails saying I was out… yes it is an advantage. I was on a jury just once, went one time before that and was not chosen, I was still working back then and it only lasted till noon, I should tell that story.

…I was on a Federal Grand Jury for a year, it wasn’t a pleasant experience!

  6. I have been summoned twice, both in the late 90s. I had to go to the courthouse with the other potential jurors To answer questions. The first time I had a difficulty in getting the person to understand I had a seriously ill foul that needed my constant attention. I finally got through and was excused. The second was a lawsuit against and insurance company that I had once used and was dropped by because a divorced woman was emotional and therefore a risk. I was easily excused from that one!

Whew, missed that bullet! Senior citizenship sure has its benefits!

  8. Good for you. California still makes you go after 70. I got out because of my COPD. My husband was recently called to go but it was the week of Thanksgiving and he didn’t need to go.
