Andy has been summoned for local jury duty, by postcard:
Apparently if person doesn’t have access to the internet they can phone and get help, but unlike the process for me when I was summoned for federal jury duty,
1) they sent a card, not a letter,
2) instead of logging on to the computer we could scan the QR code, and
3) Andy can’t be excused just because of age, even though he will be 91. To be excused he would need a statement by his doctor.
I scanned the QR code using my iPad and the two of us answered the questionnaire there. Andy will talk to our doctor and let her decide if he should opt out.
Anyway, another little adventure with modern technology.

The big thing I noticed is the term of service dates March 2 – May 29 that’s a long time. That’s roughly 3 months. So they expect you to be available for 3 months?
Yes. I was on local jury duty twice — they are for three months. It was a real pain because I had to phone in every Friday to see if something was scheduled the following week.
…I was called at the end of last year, but was excused.
That makes sense.
Our state automatically exclused people over age 65.
That’s younger than in NM for federal jury duty. Here it’s 75.
I hope you can get him exempt, I guess each state is different and am glad Bob and I could get out of ours without much jumping through govt steps.

I ADORE your cartoon! NOT FAIR! We have to get our doctor to sign a note for health purposes, but not old age. Here, all we have to do is check the box that says we are over 70 and do not want to do it. This is just not right, but maybe he could get your doctor to sign a note?
Yes, we’ve asked her and Andy just has to pick it up and send it in.
Age 70+ is an excuse in itself here in Minnesota. I think Andy could do this if he wanted to do so. He appears to be physically and mentally much younger than his years indicate. But I’m sure glad WE can be excused just for age.

Oh bummer! Here, I thought anyone over the age of 80 could be automatically excused. Please, let us know!

I have been successfully opting out ever since I got into my 80’s.
We were surprised here.
I am not a fan of jury duty. My daughter was just on a jury for the first time. I got excused a few years ago with my COPD. I could not guarantee I could be there daily. I hope he can get excused.
