The animals instinctively know what is best for them! The sunbeam chasing and laying is likely why we never see a depressed cat.

This reminds me of my favorite comic-strip character — Trixie (Hi + Lois) who loved to sit in her sun puddle.

The sun was shining the other day and I had the blinds closed in the dining room. Gibbs kept pacing back and forth in front of the sliding glass door until I figured out he wanted a sun puddle.
