Guess What?

I’m home! The doctor looked at my x-ray yesterday and said it looked healed. I should gradually increase the weight I put on that leg. But he also said I could climb stairs now, so we did it with me using the handrails and Andy giving me a boost with my Vive Transfer Belt.

Hopefully that was enough.

Yes! After 45 days it is good to be home again.

They’re Home!

Kaitlin sent this message yesterday afternoon our time,

We are home!

Stuff out of car and thrown unceremoniously in the house!

In fact I had checked a bit earlier on Find My iPad and they were in Concord, the adjoining town. So I watched them drive home on roads the Andy and I went on when we visited them three years ago. How cool is that! (Click on pictures for higher resolution.)

The icon Find My iPad uses is this picture taken at that time.

For more pictures taken at that time see Kaitlin and Torben’s Place.

Learning Language Like a Baby

You’ve probably heard that it’s extremely difficult for adults to learn a second language. You may even have proof: You tried it yourself, and it didn’t work. But maybe that’s because you took the wrong approach.

Stephen Krashen has a better idea. In the 1980s, Krashen, now professor emeritus at the University of Southern California, developed the Comprehensible Input Theory of language acquisition. The word acquisition, as opposed to learning, is key.

Learning is what you did in school: memorizing vocabulary lists and rules of grammar, taking tests, and awkwardly trying to pronounce Me llamo Juan or Comment vas-tu? Acquisition, on the other hand, is picking up a second language in more or less the same way you learned your first: by listening to and engaging with people speaking the language. Your brain does the rest without much conscious effort on your part.
—-Learning Language Like a Baby Could Help Adults Learn a Second Language Easier

This is the approach that Duolingo takes, and I’ve learned a lot. I’m still using it a little bit every day and have also been spending time watching Netflix videos with Spanish subtitles. Some of it is sticking without much effort on my part.

If anyone would like to play with Duolingo, I have a family plan and can add a few members with no cost to them. Their sessions would be completely confidential, just no charge. If you are interested in trying it, please let me know.

So Much Better Than Captcha

Instead of using Captcha a couple of sites are using this.

You just press and hold the button for a few seconds and you’re good to go. Bless them, bless them, bless them.

These are screen shots of Where’s My Ipad as Kaitlin, Torben, and the pups started their trip back east Monday morning. When I left the hospital for a rehab place last month Kaitlin set it up so she could track my iPad in case it got lost. Now we have it set up so I can follow their trip and continue to feel close.

When their reception is good the coverage is live. Otherwise it updates when it can. I love it!

Rainbows

Kaitlin, Torben and the pups left yesterday morning for their drive back east. They sent this picture later in the day:

It reminds me of this picture Torben took up on our land a few years ago:

rainbow 4

And of this photo one woman was alert and lucky enough to get.

Hurray for smart phones!

Hawaiian Luau Lunch

They invited friends and families to a Hawaiian Luau lunch Friday and suggested that the guests wear Hawaiin shirts and bring one for their loved ones too. So Kaitlin and Torben ordered some for us, including the pups.

The ones for the pups turned out to be way too small, so they wore them attached to their collars.

Here are Kaitlin and me.

I thought it was incredibly sweet of Kaitlin and Torben to do that.
