It Included Everyone!

Update: Again, not a good picture, but my bean plants haven’t died yet.

That was a big surprise.

Why The Balloon?

Yesterday Pixie asked,

How did a balloon become the go to for your birthday present?

I said it was traditional, but in fact it may be the start of a tradition. Andy used to buy me a box of high-quality chocolates, but they stopped being available. My birthday isn’t that important to me, so I wanted something easy for Andy to buy. When we were talking about it he mentioned a balloon, and a couple of years ago he had spontaneously bought me one, along with a bouquet of flowers, for Mothers Day. He had never done that before. He said he just saw them and wanted to do it.

(I didn’t have a vase big enough for the bouquet,so I put the flowers in two jars.)

So the balloon isn’t just for its own sake, it’s because of that memory.

Life Is One Adventure After Another

Recently Andy brought home my traditional birthday present, a balloon:

I was surprised at his choice, but I thanked him and said,

My favorite action figures.

He said he hadn’t looked at the pictures. It said Happy Birthday and had bright colors.

I thought it was sweet, but I had to satisfy my curiosity about the figures. I had heard of Hulk, the green one. And I figured the fellow above him with the hammer had to be named Thor, but I hadn’t a clue about the other two. It said on the balloon they were Marvel Avengers, so I tried searching for a list of names and pictures of them but didn’t have any luck. So I asked Perplexity AI. It suggested I try to find the name of the company that made the balloon. I found something better: a couple of sites that sold ones exactly like mine. And this site told me the names of the other two figures:

So, the other two are Captain America and Iron Man. How cool is that?

Later Andy told me about his experience buying it. Usually he uses a cashier, but it was only one item so he went through the self serve line. Except he didn’t know how to scan the balloon. He asked an employee who said he didn’t know either but would go off and find out. Then the fellow behind Andy said he could help…Andy didn’t have to wait. He scanned the balloon, and paid for it himself. A reminder that there are still a lot of helpful, caring people in this world.

Does Anyone Else Think These Are Funny?

Then there were these lines from Christine’s blog:

He’s making his list…
He’s checking it twice.
He left it at home.
He’s texting his wife.

Andy really loved that one. The cockroach is my favorite.

I spend a lot of time keeping up with the news, so cartoons and laughter help keep me balanced. What about you?

Winter

Our winter has been sunny so far, but no doubt these cartoons will eventually apply to us as well.

At Least Calvin Is Happy

Bill Watterson’s Calvin and Hobbes comic was syndicated from November 18, 1985, to December 31, 1995. So the above comic is at least 30 years old. It’s still relevant.

My new discovery — Calvin and Hobbes in Spanish!
